Broadband Speeds

Sarah at the TUANZ Blog reports that the latest OECD report, due in April, will measure broadband in three speed categories:

(a) 2 Mb/sec
(b) 10 Mb/sec
(c) 100 Mb/sec

Not that long ago NZ regarded 256 Kb/sec was broadband. In some European countries they are well advanced with 100 Mb/sec fibre rollouts. That is our next big challenge but it won’t happen quickly. The copper wires will continue to be dominant for at least seven or eight years I would say, and useful for at least 15.

Also, as highlighted on Sunday, there is a big difference between theoretical connection speeds and actual speeds.
