Bradford wants education campaign
Oh this is delightful. Because we the plebs do not understand how a law which will make it illegal to smack your children for corrective purposes is not actually a smacking ban, Sue Bradford has suggested a public education campaign to educate us.
Now I actually think this is a wonderful idea. I suggest all the MPs who vote against the Borrows amendment should front up to public meetings up and down the country to explain the law. It will be priceless:
Pleb: So am I allowed to smack my four old child if they misbehave and refuse to go into time out?
MP: No that will be illegal
Pleb: So you’re banned smacking
MP: No no no we haven’t
Pleb: But you just told me it would be illegal
MP: Yes that’s right
Pleb: Well then you’ve banned it.
MP: No we haven’t. You probably won’t be prosecuted
Pleb: But that’s different to whether or not I will be breaking the law.
MP: Yes
Pleb: I’m confused
MP: Yes. My pleasure.
I think the Government should also spend millions of dollars on a TV campaign like they did for Working with Families. They should remind every parent of this law, and attempt to educate them on it. Even better why don’t they set up education classes and make them compulsory!
On the topic of the smacking ban, yesterday’s Herald has a good article on the debate in Parliament on Wednesday.
