Parliament has voted 104-9 to set a deadline for filing historical Treaty of Waitangi claims of 1 September 2008.

This means that there has been over 20 years to research and file claims – more than enough.

The key challenge now for Government is to resource the Waitangi Tribunal and the Negotiations Unit so that claims can be fairly and finally settled without undue delays.

Looking at the vote figures, it looks like Greens and Maori voted against and somehow NZ First abstained and did not vote.
