The right move on youth drinking
In a highly significant move, the Government has announced it will review the supply of liquor to under 18 year olds, if the alcohol purchase age bill fails it second reading tonight.
Keep It 18 has constantly argued not to make it an offence for an 18 or 19 year old to buy a drink for themselves, bot to target the actual acts which are a problem such as supplying it to under 18 year olds.
This means MPs can now vote down the Gallagher bill, knowing that the forthcoming review will lead to a far better outcome in terms of actually targetting youth drinking, without penalising sensible law abiding 18 and 19 year olds.
This review is what the Government should have done all along, in response to the issue. Congratulations to them though for agreeing to it, better late than never.
Ironically the review will not happen if the Gallagher Bill does proceed, so that’s another reason to vote the Gallagher bill down.
