Fireworks Ban

Sigh – Marian Hobbs has submitted a bill to ban the sale of fireworks.

I’m sure Marian is very well intentioned with this bill, but it really drives me crazy that MPs so often turn to “bans” as solutions.

Time and time again a small minority of society abuse something, and MPs respond with a ban for everyone. The problem is that there will always be a small minority who abuse things, and eventually we will have banned everything.

Some 14 year olds get drunk at parties, so the solution is to ban 19 year olds from the pub.

Some kids are overweight, so the solution is to ban junk food sales.

Some people abuse fierworks so the solution is to ban fireworks sales.

Nanny State knows no bounds.
