Phil’s extensive use of the ellipsis strikes me as a written equivilent of people who say “ahhhh” or “mmmmmm” between sentences when they’re talking. It’s a way of saying “I’m still thinking, so don’t you start talking, my stream of consciousness will catch up shortly”.

I can be used as a way of dominating conversation, but in Phil’s case it seems more likely to be a way of appearing laidback (as a persuasive device). This is the template Phil comment:

“I’m just throwing thoughts out there… barely bothering to think about this… just casual observation… undermining your arguments with just the barest of my thinking capabilities… see how subsersive I am… just inserting some doubt into your position… don’t worry about me… I’m just laidback and funny… so convinced I’m right… that I can afford to present my arguments so badly”

what is it about phil’s style that aggravates people… i quite like it myself, feels like a normal conversation, you know, full of stops and starts and pauses for…. to, you know, recall the thread of the point.

but hey, i think e e cummings is the greatest poet of all time…
