More on Telecom
The Dominion Post Editorial has endorsed the Government’s broadband package saying “the Government’s move the right one”.
The NZ Herald editorial is also very supportive, and in fact compares the moves to the toppling of Saddam Hussein’s statue in Baghdad! They call for Telecom to “accept the new reality and put all its energy into competing for customers” noting “Telecom is being asked no more than to compete in what, internationally, is the telecommunications norm” and concluding “It is about time”.
The NZ Herald reports on investment plans by other ISPs, which all sound good, and yesterday’s Dom Post had a profile of David Cunliffe and his rising start within Labour.
Much coverage is on the leaked Cabinet paper, with it being described as “the most serious in modern New Zealand history“. Telecom are claiming they will co-operate yet they have *destroyed* the paper which would have been the most easy way to track down who leaked it. They also refuse to say if they will reveal the source if known to them. I wonder if they destroyed the envelope it came in also as that may have handwriting or fingerprints on it.
If the leak did come from a Ministerial Office (and I consider that most unlikely) the staff member would be sacked faster than one can blink, and his or her Minister would probably be obliged to offer their resignation also.
UPDATE: Telecom have clarified that they only deleted copies of the paper sent to them, and have kept one document which they will hand over. Unsure if they kept the original which may have fingerprints or a copy of it.
