Posting personal contact information in an inflamatory post like hers? That’s trolling pure and simple. She got what she was looking for – an inflamed response.

And no one said ‘private’. No doubt your contact information is publicly available somewhere – that does not make it ok for any blogger with a bone to pick to publish your personal details in an inflamatory post with no method of recourse.

And she did not look their info up in the whitepages – she took it from the press release they put out boasting about what they did. Even Daily Kos people worked out this is okay.

If we really want to hold up the stupidity of a few to represent the ideals of an entire chunk of a population then fine. It’s disingenuous, but this is the internet – I guess we all have to lower our standards sometimes.

All very funny, given that I have read endless posts from left leaning people claiming that crazies are the province of the right.

These students published a press release with their personal contact details in it, and an invitation to contact them.

Not only Malkin, but apparently Indymedia, Infoshop News and Oread Daily featured the original SAW press release with the details. The students might learn something from that. I doubt some of the correspondants are going to use the same tone in their emails writing to those sites.

Polemic, there is a big difference between some-one hunting through the internet for David Farrar’s personal details to publish on a post, and posting a press release issued by David where he has deliberately included those details. At least keep the examples relevant.

By endless I suspect you mean zero. There are more crazy right-wingers in the blogosphere, probably because there are more right-wingers online. But anyone who’s spent any time surfing, say, Democratic Underground, or the darker corners of DailyKos is aware that there are also an impressive number of truly batshit left-wingers venting their spleen.

Of course, if you want really truly vile insane hatespeech the right still has the market cornered

Sorry, but neither side of the political spectrum has any monopoly on fuckwits. As mentioned, the publication of said personal phone numbers resulted in THOSE people getting death threats. So there’s plenty of the angry right too.

Malkin gets the angry left because she’s a particularly aggressive righty troll. There are plenty of aggressive lefty trolls (like Michael Moore, for example) who I’m sure get similarly vitriolic hate mail from idiots.

I don’t see why this warrants anybody’s interest. You go trolling, you catch fish – it doesn’t really matter if they’re lefty fish OR righty fish.

Malkin is a disgrace to journalistic standards – just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Anyway there is too much hate speech from both sides – and massive rage against anyone who doesn’t share your opinions. Peter Cresswell says I have an embarrassing blog, and privately told me I should take a burqa b4 going out – all because I don’t think Muslims are the epitome of evil. Too many people feel that, just because you post on the internet they can make all kinds of very personal comments about you.

Too many people SUCK.

What a curious statement to make, dim, considering your previous claims you only read “mainstream” sources of information. What, then, is your opinion based on? And did you visit the Daily Kos page, where anyone not toeing the Armando party line is flagged a troll?

And the LGF post you link to is about the infamous fake Indymedia “pancake breakfast” for Rachel Corrie, the leftwing activist immortalised for being accidentally run over by a very large armoured Israeli bulldozer while she was sitting in its path during a clearance operation in the “no mans land” between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. What is your deep meaning, I’m sorry, you’ll have to spell it out. Are you equating mirth at what they thought was an act of ironic lunacy (I think later proven a fake) by Indymedia types to the emails Michelle Malkin received?

And how ironic some lefties here are attacking Malkin for publishing an activist groups own PR, as if its intimidating. What is this activist group accused of? Slashing tires, injuring one person, and generally intimidating recruiters coming onto the campus. Just the sort of behaviour which should result in the publication of their identity, and now their embarrassment.

I’ve been to UC Santa Cruz and it is an extremely liberal University town area, what you’d get if you put 10,000 Idiot/Savants in one fairly well-off place and gave them infinite amounts of money to wank on about whatever. But this sort of thuggishness seems very out of place – it’s campus is a very relaxed low-density hill area, surrounded by forests dotted with weird little pagan ritual leftovers (for real) and warning signs about mountain lions.

Ok I was going say that posting peoples details is pretty much red rag to a bull (Hi Llew) but I flipped over to read some of them and come on, thats a lot a rascist obscene threatening and plainly disturbing crap there.

None of that is an acceptable sort of response.

MM went looking for hateful loonies and struck gold.

Anyone could do the same approching it from the other side of the poltical sprectrum if they so chose.

I doubt those people represent the left (dare I say it) “mainstream” any more than skinheads kicking over Jewish headstones represent people with more conservative beliefs.

Regarding how this all started, Michelle Malkin went to a cached page, took a screenshot, and posted the image on her site because didn’t like the politics of the people. It’s not her place to justify the disclosing of this information because she deemed that they were terrorizing people. That’s an issue for the Santa Cruz police department to deal with, not her own brand of vigilante justice.
As for her own personal details – Malkin included that on her own e-mail list and that’s how it went public.
She launched her personal information about herself BY herself.
And the anti-racist One People’s Project website promptly released her new details.
Someone took it a step further and used live.windows.com and yahoo maps to do a Graphic.
Payback’s a bitch eh’ Malkin?
Her refusal to remove these kids contact information was not from conviction, but from revenue. Every journalist in the world knows that contact information on a press release is for journalists to call for more information or interviews, not to be published (or even pointed out) in the publication itself. If she were any kind of ethical person she would have pulled the information when asked.

If she were something resembling a human being with “feelings”, she would not have republished the information once the students themselves removed it. Michelle is a vicious, vindictive, venomous egoist with no discernible ethics nor even a shred of human decency. If she wants to be The Minority Woman Who Believes Minorities and Women Suck, that’s her right. But she should at least have the integrity to acknowledge that she has done wrong and to stop compounding the wrong. And she should not give us that disingenuous crap about how she doesn’t condone death threats and nobody should misuse her posting and reposting of personal information.

This thread is typically all too believable from our so called tolerant left leaning friends these days. Lets reflect on the actual facts:

students publish a press statement claiming responsibility and gloating over their illegal actions.

(and yes they were illegal, and yes there does appear to be intimidation and criminal damage going on)

They include contact details.

The press statement, in total, is sent to (BY THE STUDENTS) and published by a variety of left wing US sites – and is still on line at them.

MM (who is a shit stirrer) finds it and publishes it on her site.

cue incredibly racist and misyogenist attacks on her.

cue justification from our lefty friends, oh you see she is a nasty right winger therefore it is entirely justified to say these things about her.

Well, is it really ok?

nice, particularly from Danyl/dim and .err who consistently claim a higher standard of personal virtue on most topics. Very classy guys.

And for the record, I think it’s a matter of basic ethics to post comments on blogs using my real name. Any lefty-blogger who feels so inclined can find my home address on the North Shore electoral roll. I don’t have the ability or the right to decide who has access to public information.

And, also, on occasion I’ve drawn some criticism on various blogs that have resulted in truly vile hate mail – including one particularly charming missive wishing that my partner die slowly and painfully of AIDS. I actually hold the authors responsible, not Russell Brown or Jordan Carter or anyone else.

But seriously, I’ve had a swag of hate-mail over the years, some of it (during the GE wars) from lefties.

On rare occasions it’s been worrying, but in the vast majority of cases it’s just *sad*. The work of dark, bitter little people who can’t form an argument (or sometimes even a sentence). When you lower the barriers to communication there will be the odd unfortunate consequence.

To the people who think that this points out the left are freaks, aren’t there lunatic fringes on both sides that the ‘core’ of each side is ashamed of?

I think the real issue is that theselunatic fringes shold be marginalised, not built up.

Malkin is either a lunatic freak herself (although some of her less inflamatory writing seems reasonable) or she’s actively fanning the flames.

Anyway, there are lots of critiques on the web of Malkin’s journalistic integrity, and people should be able to read them and make their own mind up.

I wonder if this would be a big story if someone on the left published their hatemail? Oh, that’s right. Noone takes right wing lunatics seriously anyway.

Why is it an issue this time? Is it because people didn’t think there were left wing lunatics before?

Does threatening to sew up the genitals of an asian woman with barbed wire really represent acceptable language? Is it really commensurate with the supposed “crime” that Ms Malkin committed – you know linking to an existing piece of information posted on the web?

Is it really OK to deliberately and demeaningly objectify any woman?

and is it specifically Ok to do it if you claim to espouse liberal and allegedly pro-woman and pro-human rights policy. You know:

nigel, I think that there can be lots of different strains of right wing lunatics :~)

I don’t think that anyone reasonable condones the bethaviour of the people that sent the hate-mail to Malkin. But Malkin *is* tacitly condoning the death threats that the activists got by continuing to post their poersonal information after they requested it be taken down.

I also think that there are two different classes of action here.

The first is the direct action taken by people. what the activists did wrong, the hate mail senders, the people making death threats. Those people are personally responsible for their actions.

The second is when a public figure incites others to action. I’m really trying to see both sides of the fence here, but the provocative talkback radio type of stuff, which winds people up who then go out and do unacceptable things. Littlegreenfootballs has been referenced a few times in this thread and for good reason. That sort of ‘fire and forget’ scud missile, I think that the people who are responsible for priming that sort of hate need to be responsible for the cause of their actions.

They have posted detailed information about her family, ie. address, kids name and schools attended, phone numbers etc. Given the lunacy of the hard left in the US, I think she is in more need of armed protection than therapy.

And mark, they have not requested it be taken down. Malkin had an update at the end of the post saying that neither the people named, nor any representative has contacted her to request the informtion be removed. She has repeatedly offered to remove the information of anyone that requests it done.

It is interesting to see the double standard at work here. Lefties release information that is both private and sensitive and they are noble whistleblowers. Righties repeat information that is for all intents and purposes PUBLIC and they are the devil incarnate.

My point is that they probably haven’t thought about their political views and beliefs too much. That doesn’t make them left. From those comments there is very little evidence that they are anti-war, anti-capitalist, pro-choice, anti-christian, socialist, gaia-loving global warming alarmists. All I can get from those comments is that they are foul-mouthed racist angry hatemongers. I don’t think that is synonymous with the left (yes, I know, you prob think it is synonymous with the left, but that is disingenuous).

I don’t think it would be fair to say that the KKK represent the right, even if they claim to be right leaning. They are mentals, and that is all there is to it.

Reasonable people don’t say the sorts of things that were said to MM.

Not from the comments, but why did they send those emails in the first place? Because MM was doing something against some anti-war people. Therefore they must be anti-war as well. The ANGRY anti-war people are often those other things as well. Not always, but often.

Kimble, that may be true, although another possibility is that they are anti-Asian, and that they have used the anti-war platform to target her race. It is not uncommon for some groups to temporarily align themselves with another group, for their own agenda, even if their views are generally incompatible. National Maori Party for example!
