I understand that National’s tax and family support packages announced in the budget and taking effect in April have been passed into law. Does this mean that Jacinderella would cancel them?
Anybody know?

    Labour will need to pass legislation to ‘kill’ the tax cuts. It could not simply tell IRD not to implement them. The Fitzgerald v Muldoon case refers as well as one of NZ’s constitutional instruments – The Bill of Rights 1688 (UK). So it would all depend what Winston’s stance is.

      Yes they would need to pass legislation. It would simply be passed under urgency in the first couple of weeks of the new parliament. IIRC that is what the last Labour government did when they increased the top tax rate to 39 percent.

  That is actually what Labour are threatening. They are bound by the laws already passed.
  
  But wait.. Labour propose to introduce a Bill in, say, December, to remove the tax concessions, raise taxes on higher incomes, cut pensioners increases, remove the proposed increase in Accommodation Supplement and Working For Families. Some families will be over a $100/week worse off from those changes. Why don’t they take away our Gold Cards too? Social Justice? Social stupidity. They have no understanding of the Accommodation Supplement and its subsidy for rents for the lower income strata. Nor of the equity it brings those who do not enjoy lower social housing rents.
  
  Should they attempt the removal of the legislated increases they will find electoral hell to pay. They would get away with increasing payments to those prospectively targeted but to reduce any payment is political suicide–and all within their first 3 months!
  
  Amateurs and new MP’s have been counseled to keep their mouths shut and their heads down for their first three years.

    No, they will simply cancel the tax changes National have legislated but not yet effected.
    They will also announce a Tax committee to ‘investigate fairer means of taxation’, which will convene for a year then recommend a higher top rate, Capital Gains of some sort, Stronger stance on multinationals, and a few other leftie dog whistles.

    I must admit that the video footage and photos I have seen makes me ask the following questions: Fields hit the brakes (you see the brake lights on) as he ploughed into the people in the road, then hit a stationary car he probably hadn’t seen in the crowds. An instant later, Antifa thugs come sprinting up from behind and surround the car, hitting it with baseball bats (were they chasing Fields already)? Fields then hits reverse and hits the gas (surprise, surprise). Also, a Dodge Challenger is hardly the vehicle of choice to “total” in a planned ramming attack. If you drive around in one of those, you obviously love the car.

        Whatever; he might have been a conservative Charles Murray fan but the Antifa goons still might have targeted him in his planet-raping car and freaked him out. Like I say, I see enough in the footage and photos, to raise questions in my mind about his intent. The point we were discussing, is that actual Islamic terrorism to a repeated pattern, is tip-toed around and not named by the PC left, but as soon as someone who is known to be on the “right” runs someone over, before the evidence has been looked at and the guy charged, “it must have been a deliberate act of terror” – even when the circumstances quite naturally might lead to someone driving a car being freaked out and trying to flee leftist goons.
        
        But even if this is the case, the guy will never get a fair trial in the eyes of the left, like that Zimmerman guy who the leftist media disgustingly framed up as a racist by editorial cut-and-pasting of his utterances on the night he encountered St Trayvon.

With all the crap going on around the world especially in the US and Google firing an employee for daring to offer an opinion on lack of diversity in Googles workplace, I have decided to purge all my dealings with google.

I have changed my default search engine from google to duckduckgo for firefox.

As time progresses I will change my emails accounts from gmail to some other company.
Google have got to much power over our internet searching.

  I am finding it increasingly hard to find items that I know I read before, either a long time ago or recently – always when they have non-PC implications. For example, the above excerpt from Ann Coulter, I read last night – yet a Google search this morning had it nowhere in the search results. I had to go back to Breitbart’s site and find it there myself.
  
  Obviously we need to build our own indexes of things if we want to be able to find them again; Google is obviously not going to be an indiscriminately utilisable tool.
  
  I think Kurt Schlichter is right:

    Google has become the global information utility. Search is the “semantic web” that allows you to access information with human readable terms rather than via urls.
    
    When they start to tilt the playing field according to some SJW whim, they severely distort the free flow of information in the world.

      Google contracted with us to provide a an indexed reference facility in exchange for us letting them use certain data for commercial purposes.
      That presupposes that they do not edit the contents and that the ranking was by use not some other criteria.
      This has been abused. They are enriching themselves and now trying to control us too at our expense.
      I stopped advertisers following me when it became too obtrusive. Even KB has 6 trackers at present.
      Ghostery is a free utility which helps.

    I have for quite a few years now, copy paste articles that I have found of great interest to me with the link to a blog, and index them.
    It has become my library.
    I leave them in a draft state and so far for 10 years, no problem.
    
    In hind sight the tags indexing could have been done better.
    
    The funny thing the original link which worked will on certain articles will not go back to the original source, as something/spammish has taken over the website.
    I also have noticed that googling does not seem to work on a phrase as readily.
    
    I have got back through ‘archives, cache, google’ but for me it is tedious and time consuming..
    
    If I was up to it may be transfer the blog to wordpress, if it can stay in draft.
    
    Just a curious thought, and that is although art of search in the internet may have improved, that even just the past 5 years that a vast amount of stored information is out there.
    I look at what I have accumulated, and now there is no way I can sit down and read it all 🙂
    
    I am also moving slowly away from google control.
    Only face book, but not active, just to gain a view if I need more information on some link or person.

  I’ve just come from a meeting of the Islamic council in Auckland and I believe we may have come up with a Halal solution to the vehicular manslaughter that many young Muslim men are tempted into by decadent western vans and articulated lorries.
  We have realised that a western vehicle, unlike a traditional camel is a source of temptation for Muslim men. Much like a filthy western who’re woman with no burqwa.
  But if you put burqwa on woman, she is no longer a whore and the man is no longer tempted into rape, no matter how urgent the sexual emergency is.
  Similarly – if we put a large berqwa on lorry or can, the vehicle is all covered up and no longer tempting young Muslim men into vehicular homicide.
  
  Cover up your decadent western vehicles and they will be no more tragedies like Barcelona. The vehicles are to blame here! Have you seen what Spanish vans look like? All reasonably priced and made to an adequate level of quality. That SEAT probably had its window down and indicator clicking, tempting the poor Muslim young man!

    I’m going to corner the camel market in NZ. By replacing cars with camels we would remove vehicle emmisions, not have to import fertiliser from Africa and satisfy the lusts of Muslim youth.
    Also so long as you undertake wudu afterwards you can eat camel. Another win win because as well as a food it will keep us all clean.

  Yes. Like it or not, National is going to need coalition partners. The polls have been clear about that for months, and they have also been clear that it’s previous coalition partners are not going to give it the numbers needed to govern. And almost every poll for months also shows NZF holding the balance of power. Regardless of what anyone thinks about Winston, that’s just the hard mmp reality.
  
  We don’t know which way NZF will go for certain, but I think that National will be able to deliver something Labour cannot, the referendum on Maori seats. If Winston wants a legacy, it’s not going to be being PM for a short time, he will want something bigger and more lasting. The referendum is his best shot at that. National can give it to him with no concerns about angering it’s base or precipitating a rebellion from it’s MPs. Labour can’t.

Marvellous to see that Moriori have reached a Treaty settlement that will compensate them for the theft of their land by the Crown in the 1870s, the failure of successive governments to free them from the slavery inflicted by Ngati Mutunga and Ngati Tama after the 1835 invasion, and the misleading way they were presented for many decades in the education system and official documents.

There are still many Pakeha New Zealanders who believe Moriori are an extinct people; the settlement will no doubt come as news to them!

    How much will Ngati Mutunga and Nagti Tama pay? Probably about as much as the Pakeha descendants of the Waikato soldier-settlers, who also took over land they’d conquered. I do think Ngati Mutunga o Wharekauri should recognise their history and recognise Moriori as the indigenous people of the Chathams, but they continue to refuse to do this.
    
    I’m reminded of those Pakeha who refuse to recognise Maori as the first people of NZ, and refuse to recognise that the invasion of the Waikato was an act of conquest.

      Also that the Waikato tribes were not abiding by the TOW to obey the Queen/ Crown.

        The Crown violated every principle of the law when it invaded the Waikato, GoVege. Maori living in kainga around Auckland were given the ultimatum of swearing allegiance to the queen or else losing everything, and were then chased down the Great South Road into exile as their homes were looted and burned. Hundreds of people were thrown into unlawful detention, where many died.
        
        And that’s before the Waikato was even invaded. All of this was justified with the ridiculous claim that Maori were preparing to attack Auckland – a city where 12,000 troops were stationed! As George Grey’s predecessor Gore Brown later wrote, Grey was determined from the moment he arrived in NZ to invade the Waikato and crush the king movement.

      You and your kin south of the Mangatawhiri Stream, in the Waikato, are involved in a peaceful movement, the Kingitanga, designed to stop the sale of Maori land and create democratic rights for Maori. The colonial government, which operates under the Union Jack, has denied you the right to vote and is demanding your land. Armed men ride into your village and demand you swear allegiance to the queen, or else leave Auckland for the Waikato. When you leave your land is looted and confiscated. Perfectly reasonable, right? There’s a reason why the queen apologised for the Waikato War back in ’95. You don’t have to read contemporary historians to get a sense of the war’s injustice: John Gorst, a former colonial official, gave a good picture in his 1866 book The Maori King.

  What amazes me is that when this went to Court in the later 19th century, the judge sided with the Maori invaders and validated their crimes against Moriori.
  Also that the Maori elders were not even ashamed of their shocking behaviour.

    It was a shocking decision that compounded the damage done by the invasion. Some scholars, like the late Barry Barclay, who made a marvellous film called Feathers of Peace about the Chathams, have suggested that the Crown wanted to give the islands to Ngati Mutunga so that they’d stay out of Taranaki, where they might cause trouble for white settlers.

        In their June newsletter the Hokotehi Trust, the body elected by Moriori explains that Ngati Mutunga o Wharekauri still won’t accept what their ancestors did.   I’m a long way from an expert but I’m delighted to hear Moriori have made some progress with Treaty claims. Last I heard, they were in the invidious position of having Maori made ‘kaitiaki’ of their burial grounds holding the remains of the people the same Maori tribes slaughtered and ate en masse. It’s hard to beat for an’offensive’, if not absurd, arrangement.
  
  As well, I was raised with really old stories, in the understanding that Moriori were the original settlers of NZ, if with a broader group called the Patupaiarehe whom, no, I don’t think were ‘fairies’. I gather you don’t subscribe to that theory Scott, which is fine.
  
  More power to Moriori, who have been completely ignored and abused by serial generations of both cultures. The first victim of PC society is historical truth – and appropriate unbiased research of the same. It’s just a pity that in order to get anywhere, you have to do the research yourself because no govt or academic institution is unbiased enough to be trusted to do it on behalf of the public good.

      Ah, but, GoVege – I am in the fortunate or unfortunate position of belonging to no ‘tribe’ and generally successfully offending all of them at one time or another.
      
      Of course, I was also raised to be logical, rational, and employ critical thinking in pursuit of truth – the very opposite of ‘tribal’ process – or perhaps I should call it the opposite of the highly valued ‘modern’ quality of emotional intelligence. My parents took no prisoners in rational discussion and debate.

        As for the Moriori. .we may never know who were the original settlers here (obviously no humans were “indigenous”) but it was well documented at the time what terrible crimes were committed against the Moriori (and some other peaceful groups ) by war-like Maori.

        We certainly know that the 19th C notion that a Melanesian ‘Moriori’ people were first, and were driven away by latecomer Maori, is false.

        Not by all Maori but by two north Taranaki iwi. And it is worth remembering that the Moriori population had also been seriously impacted by the time of the 1835 invasion by sealers and whalers, who were mostly of European descent.

        Having pondered on that a little (so I’m coming back to this point) – was this the stuff about ‘Jewish’? (I’m not going back to read it) No. It was a genuine question. I was surprised you didn’t respond at the time.
        
        Subsequently, I did wonder if you were afraid to say you’d used an ‘old expression’ out of habit – because people who do that can be crucified the world over these days – the old ‘nigger in the woodpile’ in the UK recently, was it? Ordinary, normal people do that all the time, completely unwittingly. Perhaps you were hoist by your own petard. But it’s interesting that you were more worried about that than about the possibility of being offensive to Jews – if that’s the case.
        
        There is little enough time in the day without engaging in silly personal stuff.
        
        I care about the woman who died and the young man who’s screwed his life up killing her – for whatever reason. Whatever that reason was, and however the MSM choose to portray it, he has to live with having killed her; just as her family have to live with her being dead.
        
        I did, though, note on the news her mother identifying her as a ‘martyr’ who’s going to have more influence dead than alive. I don’t see that as a ‘victory’ either. Just sad – although I don’t begrudge her any comfort.
        
        As far as talk of ‘stereotypes’ – no-one would have been there for it to even happen without the Liberal/Left wing and the Right wing – and the former with the specific agenda of doing nothing more than invalidating and dehumanising the latter, preventing them any expression. It was a group, not individual – and in this case, a type of ‘lynch mob’.
        
        There is no ‘victory’ to be had in any of this. Odd as it may seem, I am not ‘against’ you – or anyone else.

    The idea that Moriori were a pre-Maori people was debunked by archaeologists and linguists decades ago, but the myth has been remarkably persistent as it strikes a chord with people who like to justify colonial dispossession of other peoples’ lands.
    A good short summary may be found in the book The Quest for Origins, but as its author, Kerry Howe, is an academic he’s probably a ‘cultural Marxist’ or member of the Illuminati, or something…

        Not been ‘told’ – with your implication of brainwashing – just made up my own mind from reading the literature.
        There is a long history of alternative theories about the discovery and settlement of New Zealand. Some fruitcakes still espouse some of the most bizarre – about Celts, Egyptians or Chinese.
        The ‘Moriori (sometime call Moa-hunters) were here first’ school actually did have some academic credibility, decades ago. But there is no actual evidence for it, and the pattern of settlement of New Zealand and the other Pacific Islands is now very well established.
        But, I’m going to take a wild guess that you won’t believe anything from an actual academic historian, because your great-aunty heard something different from a 90-year-old Kuia in the 1920s, or that you’re just nuts…

        If you’re happy that Moriori are back in the limelight, Anne, then you should be thanking our universities. They’ve helped support the Moriori renaissance of recent decades with their research in the Chathams (or Rekohu, as Moriori call the islands). In the ’70s there were large-scale excavations of Moriori burial sites by Otago Uni scholars led by Doug Sutton. These reinforced the fact that Moriori were not, as the ‘old stories’ said, a pre-Maori Melanesian people, and showed how they had had the same ancestors as Maori but had developed a unique variation on Polynesian culture in the isolation of the Chathams.
        
        Since then we’ve had a succession of Masters thesis, PhDs, and research papers that have added more details about Moriori life, as well as radiocarbon dates for some of their artefacts and sites. Nowadays Moriori scholars Susan Thorpe and Maui Solomon are at work.
        
        The 19th C theory that Moriori were Melanesian was created by Elsdon Best and Percy Smith, and became popular partly, as Mikey says, because it seemed to justify the Pakeha colonisation of NZ. Even today you can sometimes hear conservative Pakeha using phrases like ‘Well, the Maoris did it to the Morioris’ when they are confronted with Maori complaints about colonisation.

        Here’s Doug Sutton’s The Whence of the Moriori, which was published in the NZ Journal of History in 1985 and explains some of the findings of the digs Sutton and his Otago Uni mates held on the Chathams. Sutton talks of Moriori in the past tense in his essay, which reflects the sense that many Kiwis, even well-informed ones like himself, had that Moriori culture was extinct in the early ’80s.       I wasn’t trying to be contentious, Scott. Yes, I’ve had some slight exposure to Susan Thorpe and Maui Solomon – and others. Exceptional people in my opinion. And also stories of Moriori tribal origins, and issues in the Treaty claim, and the wider ignorance of the public about Moriori, etc.
      
      It seemed that they’d done a huge amount to substantiate the claim. Perhaps they did it through University.
      
      The comment I made is that their claim is based on their work, which they did, because they are Moriori. No government or Maori spontaneously ‘discovered’ it and/or honoured it. I’m not aware of academia doing so either – although if they supported them, good on academia, notwithstanding it’s undoubtedly tied to them being a ‘minority’.
      
      But having said that, every man and his dog is out there insisting on the prevalence of Maori culture – for decades – especially academia. Is any part of the general population doing that for Moriori – culture, language, etc? And they might be now subsequent to Susan and Maui and their efforts – but they certainly haven’t been before. That’s what I mean by ‘PC’. I’ve also seen some impressive information on Moriori work on ‘peace’ processes which could bear more general promulgation and discussion.
      
      I’m not aware of even suggesting ‘‘Well, the Maoris did it to the Morioris’…. Do people ever get tired of stereotypes? I suppose not in these forums.
      
      It’s like a general acknowledgement that no-one anymore says what they mean or means what they say so people reply based on their fantasies of what they think you said or mean or might have said or meant. I’m not aware of being particularly inarticulate – and I’m certainly not out to ‘win friends and influence people’. If I’d wanted to say that, I would have.

        It’s quite true that the Moriori renaissance of the last few decades has been created by Moriori, Anne, but at every stage they have had the assistance of academic experts on New Zealand history, and they have also had many Maori allies.
        
        I mentioned the excavations on the Chathams, which provided important new evidence, but there’s also the first public manifestation of the renewal of Moriori identity, the 1980 documentary Moriori, which you can watch online, and which shows some of the grandchildren of Tommy Solomon returning to their homeland and rediscovering, with the help of academics from the University of Otago, their culture. https://www.nzonscreen.com/title/moriori-1980
        
        And although the small Ngati Mutunga iwi has been hostile, many Maori have assisted the Moriori renaissance. Barry Barclay is probably the most famous Maori film maker, and his Feathers of Peace helped popularise the Moriori story. They rejected the submissions of Ngati Mutunga and decided that Moriori were the ‘first indigenous people’ of the Chathams.

  Even if the Reserve Bank did remove its restrictions on low deposit mortgages it would make little difference to first home buyers, BNZ chief economist Tony Alexander argues.
  
  With Prime Minister Bill English and Labour Party Leader Jacinda Ardern both in election campaign mode, this week they said they’d like to see the Reserve Bank imposed restrictions on banks’ high loan-to-value ratio (LVR) residential mortgage lending removed for first home buyers. Both politicians said the LVR restrictions had made it harder for would-be first home buyers to get into the housing market. English and Ardern’s comments follow real estate agents, with sales volumes down 25% nationally and 31% in Auckland, lobbying for the LVR restrictions to be loosened.

New Australia was a failure, but it prompted the establishment of a number of similar communities in Australia itself, some of them, along the remoter parts of the Murray River, sponsored by state governments.         Lucia Maria – er “Sabbath” day keeping refers to the Jewish practice – different day and did not involve compulsory religious attendance but a day of rest from work. The custom of religious gathering (synagogue) later developed amongst Jews and this was taken up by Christians (church on the following day), as if following on from the other, those who went from Jewish to Christian identity. Trump has attacked the removal of Confederate monuments in the American South.

The Republican governor of Maine, Paul le Page, has chipped in, comparing those who want to remove the statues to the Taliban.

Meanwhile, the leftist media is digging up descendants of famous Confederates such as General Jackson and the Confederate President Jefferson Davis. It is finding ones who support removal of the monuments.

Given that the leftists are quoting people who are great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren you can see how easy it would be to find people supporting just about any viewpoint.

If we take a low average of three children per family you are talking about three to the power of four when it comes to numbers of great-great-great grandchildren. That’s close to 250 descendants.

You would just about need to hire DPF as a statistical consultant to find the main opinion of the descendants.

You know Poland and Ukraine have been removing Soviet era memorials? The only ones upset about that seem to be the Russians.

Those Confederate memorials were originally raised as a symbol of reconciliation after the war whereas the sudden need to bring them down is divisive no matter how you spin it

And as for the removal of War memorials to the Red Army in Poland and Ukraine that is disgusting – remember when the war graves to the British, Australians and New Zealanders were destroyed in Libya? Was anyone in those countries impressed?

Of course the destruction of memorials to the soldiers who gave their lives to free East Europe from Fascism is being encouraged by the ATHEIST George Soros and the American establishment who are completely GODLESS

      Then we wouldn’t be faced with shelling out for long costly terms of imprisonment.
      Most Indians seem OK but we can’t ignore they come from a culture that is very abusive to women.

It seems the entire parliament of New Zealand is complicit in an effort to render Australian government unconstitutional – illegal government of the former prison colony.

“In a blog post on the Huffington Post, barrister Robert Angyal pointed out that section 44 of the Australian Constitution states that anyone “under any acknowledgement of allegiance, obedience, or adherence to a foreign power, or is a subject or a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power” would be disqualified from serving in federal parliament.

“Under recent and little-noticed changes to New Zealand law, Australian citizens now don’t need a visa to live, study or work in the Land of the Long White Cloud. That’s right: Any Australian citizen is entitled to live, study and work there,” he said.

“That means we’re all entitled to the rights and privileges of a subject of New Zealand – not a citizen, with the attached rights and privileges such as voting – but to be a subject of that country, living there, subject to New Zealand law, working or studying. And there’s no doubt that New Zealand is a foreign power.”

According to Angyal, if section 44 were to be taken into account, no Australian would be eligible to be an Australian MP.

He went on to explain that it’s not about using those rights and privileges of a foreign power as you only need to be entitled to those rights and privileges.

“New Zealand law has made every Australian citizen incapable of being elected to, or serving in, the Australian Parliament. It’s not just Barnaby Joyce: It’s everyone,” he added.

  I understand Robert Angyal’s argument but, speaking for myself, I’ll wait and see what the High Court of Australia decides. For one thing, if you take Angyal’s argument to its logical conclusion, Australians may have certain rights under free trade agreements (that allow them to live, work and study in other countries) that supposedly disqualify them from serving in the Australian Parliament.
