National must be getting very, very scared of Winston Peters.

I would hope that the release of such an outrageous Young Serious Offenders policy on Sunday could only be put down to the fact that National is three points below where it wants to be in the polls – as Steven Joyce said Sunday – and that it thinks it can nick this back from New Zealand First’s strong ‘boot camp’ wing. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the case – it’s worse than that.

They’re going to need more than a 3% swing. This policy will see more centre voters shift to Labour, following the Ardern-led flow over the past two weeks. It is easily seen for what it is: a let’s-get-some-quick-headlines love affair with dog-whistle politics. … read more via hyperlink above …

  Boot camp is a really good idea.
  
  Get the kids away from their destructive environment and into some discipline and routine so they have a chance of becoming contributing members of society.

    I see the media is now throwing a paddy that the youth would be exposed to guns, but English saying they would not.
    
    While I would not want them to have arms issued to them to keep in their barracks to be “lost” or “borrowed for the week end”, I have no problem with them being taught to use firearms safely on a well controlled firing range with proper instruction.
    
    At least then if they did go back to their gang-banging ways they’d understand how to handle a gun safely and be less inclined to cause collateral damage (eg. leaving loaded guns around where kids play with them).

      We had a rifle range at school. Bloody good way to learn to use guns safely.
      Not only would the teachers cane your arse till your nose bleed if you acted outside the safe handling and use procedures but everyone else was doing the same thing, so strong peer pressure as well.

    A good sound bite but at odds with youth development.
    
    The justice experience has been that youth mature and dropout of the penal system at different stages. Some go by 18, 21 and 28. Past that 40 is the next stage, else never. The Police Courts were well aware of those cohorts.
    
    The justice system is directly destructive as it encourages undesirables to control offenders. A spell in incarceration is a recipe for de-humanisation: a retraining for a prison society not the normal one. I have known prisoners commit crimes to get back inside.
    
    Previous experiments brought us Owairaka Boys Home and others where children were brutalised and locked up in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day. Despite protests children are still confined in cells.
    
    Some children are basically criminal and parenting cannot stop that; the hope is that they will grow out of it. An eleven year old can take an 8 year old brother out on a burglary and short of the home being in lock down parents may never know. Children can be plied with liquor by alcoholic adults when away at birthday parties. The adults seeking to justify their own miserable addiction. Juvenile alcoholism is rampant.
    The Court are sympathetic to parents of wayward children but welfare agencies would place them in foster care and pass the problem onto another family. There is virtually no real help available to any such child or their parents. The separation and incarceration is further damaging as it brings drug usage and further criminality for its maintenance. Forget education the schools will have the out by 14.
    
    The boot camp idea is not far removed from the old borstal which came to be known as a training ground for criminals.
    
    There may be cohort of the male population for which a term in a supervised military environment could be beneficial. Some men seem to be loners and prefer male company; they bond best with men. That group probably in their early 20’s may be suitable. They should be given education, trade training and allowed to marry as desired with a 5 year term required. Strict discipline, but paid and required to pay a reasonable board, and allowed to develop a life to fit back into civil society.
    
    The new theories of predictive child behaviour are dangerous. Do computer models have the wisdom to declare a 4 year old as a future danger and plan the life of that child and family? Should the parents be allowed further breeding rights to prevent more monsters? Should they and the whole family be terminated to prevent genetic material being passed on. Rights without morals is a very wild slope.

    Have to change their environment.
    
    Have to make sure that they are employed with someone who can mentor them onto the right path. A big ask but its what works.

You just don’t have the same level of control and can’t take evasive actions as well as you can on a two-wheeler.

    The guy in this news report was riding a typical modern 26 inch wheel unicycle in the picture with the article. They are actually highly maneuverable, a skilled rider of them can pull some impressive tricks. Two-wheelers are actually less easy to change direction on at a decent speed. There just are dangers regardless. Cycling was my thing when I was younger, I would have clocked up 10,000kms per year for a few years, and regard myself as an expert. I am infuriated by cycling being used as a pretext by activists and watermelon politicians, to “stuff the motorist some more”.

James Fields, 20, of Maumee, Ohio, allegedly killed Heather Heyer, aged 32, and injured 19 others when he rammed his car into a group peacefully protesting on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Photographs from earlier that day appear to show Fields rallying with Vanguard America and carrying a shield bearing the group’s insignia. He wears the white polo shirt and khaki pants that are the group’s uniform.’

  I cannot see the reason that the various White supremacist groups objected – was it that the Council was to take away, unilaterally, a statute of General Ulysses Grant.
  He was the General who led the North in the American Civil War against the Confederate South.
  He was President twice.
  Whoever wanted it removed must have known what trouble it would cause. One must consider it was done deliberately. I note a New Zealander was there and commented on RNZ – I ask why was he there from New York ?

Vanguard America were a highly visible presence at the Unite the Right rally on Saturday, where they marched in military-style formation, and the torchlight rally the previous night on the University of Virginia campus. On the group’s Twitter account, and on social media accounts belonging to regional chapters, there was extensive promotion of the Unite the Right rally in the weeks leading up to the event.

The group’s motto, “blood and soil” was a popular chant at both events. It is derived from the Nazi slogan “blut und boden”, which links conceptions of racial purity with a particular national territory.

It is rooted in “doctrines of universalism both secular and religious” according to Lane, and it may have been a factor that led to the murder of anti-Nazi Jewish talk-show commentator Alan Berg in 1984.   This is what happens when the only qualifying factor of membership is that you are white. Objectively it is a system that promotes weakness and inferiority. Minority organisations that have higher bars to pass are objectively superior by comparison. This is why so many on the right disavow WN movements. What else will this mean for National having given the bouffant buffoon a profile far in excess of his diminutive and rapidly diminishing capabilities? It’s slightly confounding for one of the most well-to-do of electorates having to stomach a loony lefty for so long just to provide a deeply unreliably and regularly embarrassing overhang seat! With friends like Dunne, National doesn’t need enemies.

I have worn the hair shirt for you all today and listened to Morning Report.
I’m glad I did because the Dipton farmer gave Mr Espiner a fair serve on National’s new policy on the worst young offenders.
It was abundantly clear Espiner didn’t agree with the policy – that’s fine, but his bias was obvious.
BE raised his voice, spoke over him at times – it’s normally Espiner speaking over the guest – and told him twice he (Espiner) didn’t know what he was talking about.
Go on, take one for the team and have a wee listen.
I think the debates are going to be very interesting.

      The added benefit of the army being in charge is that the boot camp at Waiouru is miles from anywhere. The isolation away from their usual ‘patch’ will be unsettling and make it more difficult to make a bolt for freedom.

  Maybe women aren’t as obsessed with coding in competitions the way men are.
  
  Many years ago I used to play Magic the Gathering (back when V3 came out). I used to play for fun and to socialise. One time only I went to one of those competitive evenings where the obsessives (mostly guys) would play. It was not fun, so I never did it again.
  
  I just had a look at the Google Code Jam puzzles, because that’s what they are, puzzles. Again, not really fun or real world, something that is necessary to solve someone’s problem for them. So, for someone like me, I’d look at it and decide to spend my time elsewhere.
  
  Point being, the results don’t mean what you think they mean, ie that women are less capable of programming than men.

So Labour’s offering $578.70 to “every student” regardless of their parent’s income. Cuthbert’s and Grammar parents didn’t get that way by turning down free shekels, so expect maximum uptake.

The 2013 census found 303,774 15-19 year olds in 2013 in NZ – that’s if you go to StatsNZ and drill down into age brackets.

Population has grown, and subtracting 15 year olds that’s probably about right for now for eligible kids. Shit let’s say it’s only 250,000.

So the policy would cost roughly $144,675,000 per year if every student takes it up, which they will, because it’s free money

Ardern has said this fee will cost $50million per year

Dividing 50million by the cost of 5 lessons plus license fees alone means an assumption only 86,000 students will take nearly $600.00 in free value.

They’re assuming only one fifth of people eligible to a free $600.00 will take the free money for their kids.

Can you get anyone to find the actual number of 16plus year olds at high school and run this?

This is beyond ridiculous. To get to that $50mill per year figure you have to either assume a fraction of eligible kids will take the free money, or every kid will only do one of five free lessons.

What the fuck are they doing. This is a minor policy, and it’s orders of magnitude wrong on it’s costing assumptions.

The Radio New Zealand Amendment Act received Royal assent from 1 April 2016.

The legislation makes some amendments to the Radio New Zealand Charter.

The updated Radio New Zealand Charter is below.

The Charter is an important document which sets out our operating principles.

It defines what we do so that everyone – staff, listeners and other stake-holders – can easily understand our objectives and what we are expected to provide for the New Zealand taxpayer.

The Charter is reviewed every five years. Radio New Zealand Amendment Act 2016.

Charter and Principles of Radio New Zealand

Purpose

(1) As an independent public service broadcaster, the public radio company’s purpose is to serve the public interest.

(2) Freedom of thought and expression are foundations of democratic society and the public radio company as a public service broadcaster plays an essential role in exercising these freedoms.

(3) The public radio company fosters a sense of national identity by contributing to tolerance and understanding, reflecting and promoting ethnic, cultural, and artistic diversity and expression.

(4) The public radio company provides reliable, independent, and freely accessible news and information.

Delivery

(5) In achieving its purpose, the public radio company must endeavour to provide services of the highest quality, which—

(a) are predominantly and distinctively of New Zealand:

(b) inform, entertain, and enlighten the people of New Zealand:

(c) are challenging, innovative, and engaging:

(d) foster critical thought, and informed and wide-ranging debate:

(e) stimulate, support, and reflect the diversity of cultural expression, including drama, comedy, literature, and the performing arts:

(f) stimulate, support, and reflect a wide range of music, including New Zealand composition and performance:

(g) reflect New Zealand’s cultural identity, including Māori language and culture:

(h) provide awareness of the world and of New Zealand’s place in it:

(i) provide comprehensive, independent, accurate, impartial, and balanced regional, national, and international news and current affairs:

(j) provide programmes which balance special interest with those of wide appeal, recognising the interests of all age groups:

(k) contribute towards intellectual and spiritual development:

(l) include an international service to the South Pacific in both English and Pacific languages:

(m) take account of services provided by other broadcasters:

(n) take advantage of the most effective means of delivery:

(o) preserve and archive broadcasting material of historical interest.

8A Principles of operation

(1) The public radio company must, in fulfilling its Charter, exhibit a sense of social responsibility by—

(a) having regard to the interests of the community in which it operates; and

(b) endeavouring to accommodate or encourage those interests when able to do so.

(2) The public radio company must, in fulfilling its Charter, ensure that it is not influenced by the commercial interests of other parties.

(3) The public radio company must, in fulfilling its Charter, ensure that it operates in a financially responsible manner and, for this purpose, that it—

(a) prudently manages its assets and liabilities; and

(b) endeavours to ensure—

(i) its long-term financial viability; and

(ii) that it acts as a successful going concern.

8B Commercial-free broadcasting

(1) The public radio company must, in fulfilling its Charter, provide its services in a commercial-free manner.

(2) Subsection (1) is subject to subsection (3).

(3) The public radio company may provide 1 or more of the services specified in subsection

(4), if the provision of the service or services—

(a) is consistent with its role as a public broadcaster; and

(b) does not impact adversely on the provision of its services under its Charter; and

(c) is a fair and appropriate use of public funds.

(4) Subsection (3) applies to the following:

(a) providing media services to countries outside New Zealand, other than Radio New Zealand International or any radio services that might replace, in whole or in part, Radio New Zealand International:

(b) authorising other providers of media services (whether by sale or licensing) to broadcast or publish content that has already been broadcast or published in a commercial-free manner by the public radio company:

(c) arranging for providers of delivery platforms to provide access to live broadcasts of the content of the public radio company, but only if—

(i) the content is free to access on the public radio company’s services; and

(ii) the content is commercial-free, whether or not the delivery platforms are free to access; and

(iii) any advertising or sponsorship on the delivery platforms is not expressly or impliedly presented as advertising or sponsorship carried or endorsed by the public radio company (other than announcements of the public radio company’s own services).

(5) In this section,—

commercial-free

(a) means—

(i) free to access; and
(ii) without advertising and sponsorship; but
(b) to avoid doubt, does not include announcements by the public radio company of its own services

delivery platform—

(a) means any method of transmitting audio, visual, or audiovisual content; and
(b) includes (but is not limited to) Internet sites, applications, and software.

Just watched the 5-30 news. On it, I saw jacinda Adern use the word “gotten” instead of got. she has been watching too much American TV. This shows her up as not too bright in. My opinion.

Also the Police described the firearm used in the last shooting incident as a “semi automatic machine rifle”. No such thing, but good to get them closer to machine guns in the public’s mind so banning will become easier in the future.

Had a guy at work commit suicide a couple of weeks back and now everyone has to attend a 3 hour group session with some counsellors and other assorted quacks so we can share our feelings and grief.
Given the guy was really odd and hardly ever spoke to anyone what is the damn point as nobody I have spoken too has any feelings about it what so ever besides being ambivalent.
Box ticking from new age management types who want to be seen doing the right thing I suppose.

  Those sorts of things are always better when there are sausage rolls, plus it has the added benefit of upsetting joyless vegetarians and the fashionably gluten intolerant.

  That’s probably illegal under some law or other. Its been proven that the outcomes from 200 different pscyh modalities were the same over a 10 year period. The initial diagnosis was irrelevant. That worried the commissioning US medical body at the time.
  Group “counselling” has been used in alcohol abuse programs and has brought about greater disturbance.
  These very dubious practices should be banned. There is no proof of healing but there is of harm.

Interesting thought on another “waste of money” from labour 5 Free (taxpayer paid) driving lessons. Well according to some driving schools in NZ complete beginners need approx. 20 – 25 lessons to become competent. So 5 free lessons are a waste unless the young person then goes on and pays for the other 15 lessons.
to quote “We tailor every lesson to the student and will let you know how you’re going, but in general, a complete beginner with a little practice can be taught to drive with approximately 20 lessons in an automatic car and 25 lessons in a manual car.” – Waimack driving School courtesy of google.
