  The problem is that a certain section of the voters vote for the Pig because it has nice hair, or a Vagina, or nice white teeth. Understanding policy is difficult and anyway politicans shaft you whatever their party.   Regarding where Labour’s money is coming from. Caught a bit of The Nation (replayed) on the radio last night. Lisa Owen interviewing the main Finance Ministers National’s Steven Joyce and Labour’s Grant Roberston.
  
  Lisa Owen: Let’s look at your numbers, because I think this is important. All your projections are based on current growth projections, and those are based on high immigration numbers. Immigration is underpinning our economy, and you want to turn that tap right down. Where’s your extra money coming from?
  
  Grant Robertson: The budget that our numbers are based on, and, indeed, Steven’s budget, sees immigration returning to its long-run average within two years. So we’ve both got the same budget. We’re going to grow the economy.
  
  Ooookaaay … so Labour’s answer is kill of the nation’s multi-billion dollar farming/export economy (eg by imposing draconian taxes on them and no doubt toughen up environmental protection aspects overnight thus adding additional costs to the sector, reduce cows etc), dish out more taxpyer money to whatever sector they wish to bribe (students and education, health workers, no doubt more wage equity everywhere, more for low wage earners, more for everyone it seems) and somehow Labour is:
  
  a) “going to grow the economy” (Tui ad)?
  b) not explain realistically “how” (has Labour commandeered the Greens’ printing press from the last election)?
  c) Labour will somehow do this with Grant “cut & paste the Economist” Robertson as the Finance Minister? And Jacinda as PM making the “tough” calls? Good grief!

I see that Ardern is now on the Pay Equity bandwagon.

Yes, I know that certain industries are lower paid, and those industries, such as aged care, do employ a large number of women. The problem is, many of these retirement villages do care for the most vulnerable, in doing so, do need to keep costs to a minimum.

Recently, the Caughey Preston retirement home was forced to close, making 400 elderly residents effectively homeless. Wesleyhaven Village in Naenae is also considering closure. Both have become financially unviable and both have cited the labour costs as a factor.

What good is “pay equality” if you are unemployed? Who will take care of our most vulnerable?

    So why are age care workers low paid? Mainly because it is a low-skill job without shitty working conditions.
    
    An age care worker needs less training than a security guard and does not have to work outside in the cold and rain.

      Do you know how to move and lift a person who cannot help themselves without injuring yourself, that takes training.
      How good are you on changing the nappies of an elderly or infirm person, do not tell me that it is not a “shitty job”.
      All the while most of these people smile and talk to the patients, residents.
      I watch where my mother is living and am most impressed with what I see.

  And who will take care of them if the existing workers decide that the pay is hot enough for the work that they do and leave.
  There needs to be balance. from my observations the care workers in resthomes appear to do more than the actual registered Nurses employed at higher wages. The RNs dispense the pills and put on dressings and nurse type tings. The care Workers change the nappies, do the showering, hair washing, personal cares of all types and all the while smile.
  It is hard physical work, lifting a seemingly inert object when the elderly person cannot move of their own accord.
  The care Workers whom I observe deserve every penny of their increased wage.

    As an ex ditch digger I want equality. We dug, lifted, scrapped flushed out sewers, put patches on pipes but the profession still only gets the minimum wage.
    I want equality for a profession that is mainly male.
    We dont get nice uniforms, cups of tea and lunch provided. We get to work out side no matter the weather or how cold it is.
    My partner says why should I go to university for three years, run up a student loan when the untrained person working beside me gets 90% the wage I’m getting, the same perks and working conditions.
    I’m going to corner the wheelbarrow market because if the left get in everyone will need one to take home their pay.

    My point is, what value is an increased wage when there is no job to pay it.
    
    Wesleyhaven home is closing on August 14. 79 staff who may well have popped the champagne when equal pay was won, will now be getting far less than that.
    
    This is a situation that has arisen as a direct consequence of the pay equity agreement. Simon Wallace, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Aged Care Association is on record as saying several homes have had to close because the wage demands have made them unviable.
    
    There are many people who I think, should be paid more, but if the job they are in cannot sustain them, then a victory on paper, such as the court case for equal pay, has the potential to turn into a painful defeat, affecting not just hundreds of workers, but also those they are charged with taking care of.
    
    In this regard, if Labour is to pursue Pay Equity as a policy platform, who will cover the increased costs?

      Socialist cindy will be pleased. The soon to be unemployed rest home employees will be martyrs for the cause. At least they will in the best traditions of communism be on equal footing.
      
      I know of a very good beautique retirement home that is closing its doors as they are unable to pay the increased wages. Such a shame as it was very well run and the type of place you would have no hesitation having your parents stay there.

      It will be lost on the socialists. They have one phrase, stuck on repeat, going through their echo-chamber heads “it’s fair!”
      
      In the world of cause and effect, they have raised the wages above value. Expect a lot more closures, increased fees and only the well off will be able to afford them. Their next step will be subsidy, and the bill will be off the charts.

    You are right about the physical work balance between the Carers and the RNs, but I have a friend who has stopped working as an RN in a care facility because the amount of paperwork and liability for the outcomes of Carer care has proved too stressful. She says that she would rather be a carer – and that with the increased pay she would be better off without the responsibility.
    She is raising milking goats now and says its very profitable.

        There isn’t enough money to pay for state beneficiaries. You could take 100% of the earnings of the 1% and there still isn’t enough.
        
        NZs fundamental problem is productivity. Until that is markedly increased – and not one of our politicians has a clue about it, whilst half of them are unwittingly destroying it – then the future will be bleak for the least wealthy.

        I am constantly meeting solo mums who have produced 11, 12 or more kids!
        And the married ladies do even better: I have met people whose mums produced 17 to 22.
        And I heard that Joseph Thompson was from a family of 18 and Nia Glassie’s mum was one of 17 or 19 kids.

  For example, if there were enough people in Germany persuaded by EAD’s thinking, there would indeed be statues of Goering in every home.

  Some councils will guarantee loans for housing, such as some do with pensioner housing and do the administration and maintenance.
  Many want a German or Swedish system that has seen a shortage, so have gone on building sprees.

Yesterday’s Wanganui Chronicle editorial is very disappointing. The author, Simon Waters, is displaying a lack of knowledge about MMP.

It is Nicola Patrick’s absolute democratic right to stand as a candidate in the Whanganui electorate representing the Green Party. It is also her absolute right, and that of her chosen party, to campaign only for the party vote.

Mr Waters, in calling for her not to be on the ballot paper, has not done his homework. If Ms Patrick did not stand in the electorate, she would not be invited to candidate meetings to articulate the Green Party’s view. Nor would she be able to campaign within the regulated election period (which started on 23rd June) in the same manner as any other candidate, subject to a budget and rules set by the Electoral Commission.

The Chronicle seems determined to make this election a race between the National and Labour candidates. By suggesting Ms Patrick withdraw her name because of the Memorandum of Understanding between Labour and the Greens Mr Waters is essentially advocating what Patrick Gower from Newshub describes as a “dirty deal”.
Is that what the voters of Whanganui want?

Ultimately, every individual who goes to the polls will make their own decision. The Whanganui Chronicle ought not be trying to influence that decision.

  Agreed, Whanganui’s version of the failing newspaper is running a poll which says the Liebour candidate is leading 51% to 38%. The Nats have a 4000 vote majority as a large proportion of the electorate is not in the Chronicles distrbution area.
  They say “The Chronicle’s pre-election poll is not scientific, nor necessarily indicative of the outcome, so should not be taken too seriously ” So why to they make it the main headline????.

  This morning when asked for details they said 1 or 2 cents. When pressed they said closer to 2c per 1000 litres.
  At 4070 million cubic metres ( 1 cub = 1000 litres) thats about $80 million or $7000 per farmer.
  Most farmers are spending more than that a year voluntary to reduce pollution so maybe its a win win for farmers as they will stop fencing waterways and planting as the councils and maori who own the water can do it.

Facebook. twitter and Youtube are all heavily censored. Conservative Youtube channels are being shut down or demonintized so they can’t make any money from them.

National has a policy on serious youth offending, into boot camp for them.
I say about time, give these young people an opportunity to turn their lives around. They need to learn to discipline themselves.
Penalise the parents as well, about time for that as well. These parents take from society without a care or desire to give back.
As taxpayers we need to take charge again, you want “free money” for doing nothing then we have the right to demand that you start parenting and also the right to try and turn your children’s lives around.
The bleeding hearts will say that that is unfair.

Finally National and Bill English have come up with a policy on wayward children and holding the negligent Parents responsible to account To go with this they will have boot camps for those that choose not to obey the law and comit crime. National will set up the boot camp at Waiouru Army Camp along side NZ soldiers and would crack down on serious young offenders. Not before time well done National. Two ticks blue.

      I agree NW. A day or 2 ago the young chap n the Eastern Bay of Plenty who shot at police i to protect his dope crop (sorry, wasn’t interested in his name) was up in court. Not only was he unrepentant asking the Judge to remove his cuffs, but also asserting he be paid $10k in compensation and to cover his legal expenses. He was instead given 10 years in prison.
      His mother said it was all just racism, cause the cops pick on Maori.

      I think some form of National Service should be expected before anyone can access higher education/training/ or benefits in NZ.
      
      I don’t think Military training is suitable for all folks.. but I think a basic Civil Defence/First Aid/Driving/Cooking/Budgeting/Fitness programme could be organised.
      
      rich/poor/male/female/ exclusive religions, etc. would all be expected to front up.
      
      Modified programmes only for folks with health and intellectual disabilities.

        Then what is your definition of “life”. Is it limited to the presence of a heartbeat? Must the sufferer be able to breathe or can artificial means to supply air be mandated? Is conciousness a requirement or is a vegetative state life? Is quality of life of any import?

But are you saying that the fact that on balance euthanasia is non-Biblical, at least that is view of most theologians, Christian ethicists, clergy and Christian laity plays no part in your opposition to euthanasia? At all?!
      
      But if you have to lie and radically misrepresent other peoples views to make your arguments, that reveals a lack of rational and rational debate.
      
      Hmm. In the light of your belated clarification yesterday that you don’t think I am a “massive bigot”, I hesitate to use the terms “self-deceit”, “lie” and “radically misrepresent” your own view…but are you really saying your Christian beliefs are entirely absent from your opinions concerning euthanasia?         Kimbo, how on earth did you manage to get that from what I said? At no point did I say that my faith does not inform my view on the issue. I said that my faith does not hold to the view that suffering is good, or that God requires it.
        
        And I said “that I value life” which is obviously related to my faith.
        
        So of course my faith plays a role, though I would qualify that by saying it does not play the simplistic role that some here (Griff, nasska, mikenmild) claim. I look to a wide variety of sources when it comes to political issues, not all of them Christian. I don’t just read the Bible and then state what I think is the right answer to an issue. It’s more involved than that, as you well know.

        For the Mother Theresa comment? Fair enough. Not saying that is the case with the spirituality of Catholics (hence I used the term “ghoulish uber-Catholic”), but from a Protestant perspective, the idea that one must suffer in order to satisfy a redemptive requirement is contrary and antithetical to our doctrine of Sola Christo/Christ alone is the one who accomplishes our salvation. Hence some Protestants find the glorification of personal suffering…incompatible with our Christian faith and practice.

        Because, when it suits, some Christians argue in the euthanasia debate, “my faith position is irrelevant to the merits of my arguments”, and/or variations on “everyone has a form of faith”, when most others, including the NZ Medical Association whom you cite purport and attempt to be entirely empirical in their approach.
        
        Doesn’t make a faith-held and informed position invalid as such, but it shouldn’t and doesn’t hold any currency for those who don’t share it.
