I’ve often wondered why the cops have to take an offender to the station for the official machine test after exceeding the EBA by the road.

Those things are accurate enough for me, especially when the drunk driver gets two goes at it and they take the lesser of the two readings. But no – it’s off to the cop shop, then the blood test if they want. Then off to court.

What a waste of time and money. Why not book them by the road, call the towie, take the licence, come and get it in six months. Challenge the state if you want, at your expense.

Who would complain about it apart from Michael Bott?

  And there should be no need for the offender to be allowed to contact a lawyer (courts ruled this necessary because of the Bill of Rights Act). All the lawyer can advise is for the offender to go through with the testing procedure. Actually I thought the roadside units were already ‘evidential’ (there was a calibration issue a little while back) but presumably that is for low level infringement notices only.

  It is a limitation of how the devices are designed and operated.
  
  Electronic chemical sensors are notoriously challenging to calibrate. Add to that a bit of rough handling and the saturation effects of many people breathing through the device and you really start having questionable readings.
  
  The technology is improving, but it is still not up to being challenged by shiny-pants lawyers.
  
  Thus the first stage breath test is just screening, it is not sufficient for evidence to convict.
  
  Hence the need for a carefully monitored and calibrated unit to be used to make a controlled chain of evidence.

The NZ Heralds lead story is a continuation of its obsession with the weather.’Live – worst storm of the year. Snow in south, Desert Rd closed’ shouts the headline. The southern passes and Desert Rd are inaccessible, the ferries are cancelled, there’s snow to low levels and high winds. Well guess what NZ Herald, it’s mid-July, it happens every year and it sure as hell ain’t headine news. Next up will be your sister radio stations interview with a NIWA spokesperson (a Californian of course) with the mandatory reminder that it’s all due to our inattention to carbon levels and it’s a sign of much worse things to come.

It must be Wednesday or any other day but I hear early this morning on Radio Left Wing that it must be a usual Trump Hate Day.
The New York Times has released the copies of the em’s, given to them by Trump Junior, about the meeting that he and others had with a Russia woman Lawyer contrary to her invitation.
So f……what !
The media are obsessed, and expect us to be, but are rather sad along with the left wing pro and financed by the Clinton/Obama political movement in the mainline USA of which millions of US people do not have the slightest interest.
These many many political committees are desperate to show how stupid they are.
No wonder the world is laughing at them – Russia particularly, watching them makes fools of themselves with nothing better to do.
Is this the only Russian evidence they have found so far ?
I get the impression that these moon dreamers are awaiting the loner to give them cause to cheer. They will without a doubt.
Like it or not if we assume that the USA is a Democratic country, which they continue to proclaim, then why cannot they accept that Trump was elected in accordance with their hailed world famous Constitution.
Now I must go for my morning walk.

  The approach was made by a British national who is the agent for a Russian pop star. The said the Russian was the “Crown prosecutor of Russia” a position that does not exist.
  Turns out she did not have “Political Opposition Research” but she just wanted to push the Russian adoption issue.

  the media are consistently missing the story. Clinton’s hacked email server should be the story. Taking cash for favours while Secretary of State and deleting thousands of emails to avoid prosecution is the story. The story is not the fact that someone was looking into it.

      Actually FBI concluded that many Clinton emails were classified, and were shared with non-cleared people, but that was no ‘intent’ to be naughty (even though law covering this is clear that intent is not needed).
      
      There is no way of knowing who else might have gained access to the emails on this insecure server.

      ztev – that is so not true! Hillary Clinton did all of her work at the State Department on her own personal server. There are many examples of classified material found on that server. That she did not get indicted by the FBI is one of the great mysteries of our time. If anyone else had done a fraction of what she had done regarding the handling of classified material they would be in jail right now.

  Donald would have got his son in law to release these emails knowing the media would lift their response to ‘frenzy’ mode. Trump can play the media beautifully and they fall for it every bloody time. The elected Democrats are beginning to fall apart because they have spent so much time maligning and blocking Trump, that their voters are starting to ask why they aren’t doing what they are paid for.     A couple of interesting things
    The British PR guy got in touch with Don Jr because he and his client already knew him from the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow and because they were doing business trying to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.That would be why Trump Jr believed it when he was told he was getting dirt on Clinton from the Russian Government. The Trump connections with Russia run deep.
    That must also be why he agreed to a meeting with a Russian lawyer with no apparent Kremlin connections and thought it was important enough to get Kushner and Manafort along. It makes him look a bit thick, particularly as he let someone set up an appointment with an agent of a hostile government in order to take delivery of Intelligence aimed at interfering with the US election in WRITING!. I don’t normally resort to capitals and exclamation marks but that is really dopy.
    Someone in the Whitehouse tipped the NYT off about this and it must have eventually dawned on Don Jr that they had the emails. He is belatedly trying to get in front of this. The big question is who is trying to get at Don Jr?

  I think you’re asking the wrong question. New Zealand workers put in much longer hours on average than other OECD countries, but productivity is far lower. That’s according to this 2013 report.
  It would seem to me that if all those working hours were utilized more efficiently the workers could be paid more and there would be less need to prop up those at the bottom of the heap . . . . . .

    Productivity gains require capital investment. People want to invest in NZ but a lot of that money is going into property. There are two main reasons for that.
    
    First, there are tons of taxes and regulations that burden productive activity but not property investment. Second, if someone does invest there is anguished screeching about “foreigners buying up our country”.

      That’s rather simplistic.
      
      If you said “some productivity gains can be garnered with significant capital investment” it would be more accurate.
      
      Capital investment is only one of many factors that can improve productivity. And yes, it is one of the constraining factors in the NZ economy – I’m not sure it’s even the biggest constraint factor. Have a look here to get a better understanding.
      
      Other factors play a much greater role in determining productivity – government for one. National’s virtue-signalling on the made-up marxist concept of pay equality has massively reduced productivity in the aged care sector. No amount of capex investment would undo the huge dent in productivity in that sector!

        The fact that you don’t even consider the share market an option is exactly what is going wrong. House prices are chicken and egg – people invest because of price increases then we get more price increases due to demand from investors. Breaking that cycle and making business the preferred investment option is essential. There are various ways of doing that, none of which are being seriously considered by the government.

Interesting that it is worthy of a national award if you promote “diversity” (the codeword for less Whites).

Shocking revelation that will change the election. Following allegations from Ztev and his ilk that Mark Dunajtschik has rorted the IRD out of $50M through his ‘donation’, it appears NZ’ers evade tax by donating nearly $3B in 2014 alone.
Apparently we are third worst for tax avoidance in this way, behind Myanmar and the US.
I demand an immediate commission of inquiry into this crisis.

    You can claim a 33% rebate from IRD for donations to approved charities for a total value of donations up to your annual income. In this instance the $50M donation can be spread over several years and paid out as the hospital is being built.

One is the ODT about a “decorated” former cop done for drink driving in Q’town . He’s not decorated , he received a district commander’s award. Big difference.

The other is from the UK talking of first “Muslim” gay wedding . Only it’s not a Muslim wedding , it’s a registry job.

  Just look how matter of fact they report it

  The former Asda worker said he would support his daughter if she was transgender and would not raise her as gender neutral.
  It comes as Scott Parker became the first man in Britain to give birth to a baby on April 29 – more than six weeks before Mr Cross.
  
  And this is from a supposedly “right-wing” paper who we are told are the “voice of Middle England”……..We are living in a madhouse

Be very afraid if your job is one of these or you have kids thinking about any as a career in the future.

When people imagined robot workers in the past, they often visualized a machine with a human form performing physical tasks. The reality that is currently developing includes elements of this, but the real advances are being made in artificial intelligence. As a result, the robot that takes your job in the future is much more likely to be a computer program than a physical, moving machine.

This puts a much wider range of jobs at risk from the increasing deployment of robots. Many of these jobs were once considered completely safe as they required human intuition and intelligence. This includes white collar jobs and many that require significant levels of education.

Here are 11 of the jobs that robots will take first – and you might be surprised by some of them.

1. Middle Management

This doesn’t apply to all middle management job roles, particularly those that involve significant elements of people management. If the people you manage are overtaken by robots, or your role is more about working on a spreadsheet and/or analysing data, robots are likely to take over.

2. Salespeople

This is another one that doesn’t apply to everyone. Jobs that should be safe include those that involve significant amounts of negotiating and cajoling of clients, particularly in business to business transactions. For other products, including many consumer products, the sales process is much simpler. Customers want to know what best suits their needs, the specifications, the benefits, the price, and the availability. Robots, known as chatbots, are already doing this in some companies. Expect the rate of robot implementation in these types of sales jobs to increase.

3. Sports and Financial Journalist

Again, this applies to a specific type of sports and financial journalist. In sports, they are the people that write reports that include the match score, scorers, MVP, and other factual information. Robots can – and do – write this content just as well as people. The same applies to financial reporters who simply read the numbers and put them into words. The sports and financial journalists who will survive the robot cull will be those that go behind the numbers to interview, commentate, and investigate.

4. Accountants

Accountants are intelligent people who do important jobs, but much of their work is formulaic and based on numbers. In fact, cloud accounting programs already perform some of the tasks that would have traditionally been performed by an accountant. The number of tasks such computer programs can perform is likely to increase to the point where many accounting roles become obsolete.

5. Bookkeepers

Following on from the last point, bookkeepers are even more at threat than accountants. Increasingly, transactions and records of transactions happen digitally. The requirement for a person to oversee this is becoming less and less important.

6. Doctors

This is a controversial one, but AI innovators are already making progress. In fact, there are documented cases where AI robots, including IBM’s Watson, have been able to diagnose a condition in a patient faster than a real-life doctor. One of the reasons is the ability of the machine to consume much larger amounts of information in a shorter space of time. Healthcare is likely to always require elements of the human touch, but if machines can analyze symptoms and make more accurate and faster diagnoses, they will start to save lives. The role of doctors as we know them today will, therefore become diminished.

7. Surgeons

Surgeons are also at risk too. In fact, robots already perform some operations in some locations, including knee replacement surgeries. Not only will robots be cheaper than paying a surgeon, they are also proving to be more effective in operations that require high levels of precision. It won’t be long before a surgeon is no longer necessary in the room.

8. Bank Tellers

For years, ATMs have been able to do large proportions of a bank teller’s job. This was even before the recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence. There is, of course, still a proportion of society who feels more comfortable going into a bank than trusting a machine with their money. It’s hard to think, however, of anything a bank teller does that an ATM couldn’t do equally well. In fact, ATMs might even be at risk when physical money becomes obsolete and all transactions are digital.

9. Financial Analysts

Financial analysts are important to many companies as they can spot trends, opportunities, and risks before they happen. The job essentially involves analysing data, however, which, as has been mentioned many times already, machines have a better capacity to do than people. As a result, the financial and banking industries will probably be the most impacted by the initial rise of robot workers.

10. Construction Workers

Robots already exist that dramatically cut the number of construction workers required on a site. These machines work specifically on repetitive jobs such as bricklaying, and they are getting more and more intelligent. They work faster and they don’t get tired so can work for longer. In fact, theoretically, they could work around the clock. Construction sites are, of course, notoriously difficult to plan absolutely so there is likely to always be a need for humans to help deal with the issues that always arise. However, almost all roles could soon be significantly replaced by a robot.

11. Taxi Drivers

This is another area where there are already examples of robots taking over jobs from humans. With taxi drivers, autonomous vehicle technology makes this possible. When a car can drive on a public road anywhere in the world without the need for a driver, the role of taxi drivers will become instantly obsolete. With the companies currently working in the field of intelligent cars including many of the major car brands and tech companies like Google’s parent company Alphabet, that could be sooner than you think.

        I don’t hate cats. I just dislike their cupboard love and fair weather friendship. They come and go as they please, draw blood if their mood is off, take food off the bench, spread hair all over the place. Boy what a treat to have a cat. Admittedly, I have not really had positive experiences with cats. Dogs are far more loyal and a true pet. And just for Sarkozygroupie…Never killed any, still not a crime to think about it though eh!       I remember that just a few years ago someone poisoned a lot of the cats in Raglan (I think). The upshot was that there was a dramatic drop in the number of birds, as without the cats to keep them in check there was an increase in the number of rats raiding the nests. As in most things, it’s all a matter of balance.

It takes a while to time out, and while it’s attempting to load causes other things to not work. I’ll email DPF and let him know.

    Like backing Le Pen in France. And then there’s the questions over how much influence Russia had on the Brexit vote. That’s popped up as news items a few times, only to sink back under the radar again (apparently it’s being investigated, though I’m not sure how vigorously).

  The argument for name suppression has incrementally jumped the shark. As you state there’s no possible stigma attached to the kid as a victim.
  
  Equally we frequently see a child sex abuser granted suppression because he/she was a third cousin to the victim or a short term step parent. With the anonymity granted they’re set to repeat the process later.
  
  There’s no such thing as name suppression in the USA yet people cope.

  Trump Jr., Kushner and Manafort’s lone meeting with the Russian lawyer pales when compared to the coordination between Clinton allies and Ukrainian government officials who hoped to see Clinton win the 2016 election.
  
  Politico revealed in January some of the Ukrainian government’s anti-Trump activities during the election.
  
  A veteran DNC operative who previously worked in the Clinton White House, Alexandra Chalupa, worked with Ukrainian government officials and journalists from both Ukraine and America to dig up Russia-related opposition research on Trump and Manafort. She also shared her anti-Trump research with both the DNC and the Clinton campaign, according to the Politico report.
  
  Chalupa met with Ukrainian Ambassador Valeriy Chaly and one of his aides, Oksara Shulyar, at the Ukrainian Embassy in March 2016 to talk about unearthing Paul Manafort’s Russian connections, Chalupa admitted to Politico. Four days later, Trump officially hired Manafort.
  
  The Politico report also notes that the DNC encouraged Chalupa to try to arrange an interview with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to talk about Manafort’s ties to the former pro-Russia president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, whom Manafort previously advised.
  
  The embassy declined to arrange the meeting but was nevertheless “helpful,” Chalupa told Politico. “If I asked a question, they would provide guidance, or if there was someone I needed to follow up with,” she said, but added that “There were no documents given, nothing like that.”
  
  Chalupa also told Politico that the Ukrainian embassy worked directly with reporters in uncovering dirt on Manafort and Trump.

    Ukraine does not consider America to be an enemy.
    
    Russia does consider America to be their No.1 Enemy, their Prime Adversary.
    
    Therefore, Ukraine trying to help Hillary with whatever they know about Trump being connected to a mutual enemy (remember Russia has invaded Ukraine??) is not the same as Russia hacking info on Hillary and trying to help Trump.
