  Yes he’s going over the top a bit at the moment, unfortunately he’s got a chip on his shoulder that Key didn’t wreck Nationals chances (and ours as a country) by very publicly supporting him when Dotcom/Labour and Hagar stole his emails.
  Collins is obviously a highly capable individual , but the media will attack her constantly.
  English is avery steady pair of hands , much improved from 2002 and won’t scare the horses , in the short time prior to next election.

    Yeah, I’ve always hoped since 2002, that English would ultimately be NZ’s John Howard. Howard had a similar reversal early in his career but ultimately Australians came round to trust him. And he set the agenda in Australia to such an extent that Rudd and Gillard could not undo much, like Key didn’t undo much of Clark’s agenda. Very different agendas, sadly (take mining and private school funding as two prominent examples).

Labour is going all out with the medias backing in saying that there is a lot of unrest from the National back bench this coming from a Party that has had a history of doing dirty’s on four of their own Leaders in eight years. Labour forget they are run by the union because of the inept way they decide leadership battles and only refresh with former union leaders and you only have to look at Andrew Little to reinforce the reason he was elected .Labours objective is to create a diversion from their own in fighting and cover up how inept they are.

Civil Defense are incompetent fools. Vague warnings on News Talk ZB about a tsunami. No actual details.

Stuff has it possibly arriving in around 3 to 4 hours and only about 30cm high. Those without the Internet are in the dark.

Bloody useless. Thought they might have learnt after the Kaikoura quake but no………..

    Two in 1947 in Gisborne but they were not anything by any world standards.

  What exactly would you have Civil Defence do in the first couple of hours after an earthquake which might or might not deliver a tsunami to New Zealand?
  
  Bearing in mind that – as has been explained again, and again, and again, and again – these things are impossible even to measure, let alone to predict, in real-time. Even the most experienced and best equipped geological scientists don’t, and can’t, know, within the first few hours after the event, whether any given quake is going to lead to a tsunami. Therefore they cannot give, and therefore Civil Defence cannot be expected to have, precise information as to whether, when, how large, and which parts of NZ are likely be affected.
  
  So you don’t like it when they give “vague” information and “no actual details”. Of course that’s unsatisfactory, but they simply do not have the “actual details” and therefore do not have the option of giving precise information in useful time. Would you rather they gave no information, or that they made up spuriously precise information which is bound to be wrong?

    Basically if you don’t have internet you have to rely on Radio news that in my experience is crap. This morning Stuff provided reasonable coverage of the Tsunami that would have been reassuring to those living in coastal areas.
    
    As there are coastal areas where internet reception is poor I feel sorry for those folk in the front line who rely on what they hear on the radio. In this case diddly squat.
    
    It should be a level playing field as stuff was well ahead with important updates.

We’re going to hear a lot of this about 20.9% tossed in Bill’s face all next year – the whole country is going to be reminded all next year about this by Labour/Greens.

As Paul Keating so cleverly put it – “A souffle doesn’t rise twice”.

The next op poll will tell whether Kiwibloggers are right or whether I am. I say English will drag Nats down to 45% by the end of Jan and 43% by election time. The National caucus turkeys just voted for Xmas.

    I don’t think much has changed, this election was always likely to be Lab/Green/NZ1 or Nat/NZ1 and I guess Bill is the least likely to spook soft Nat voters across to Labour, or at least that’s the calculation that the caucus have made.

  I hope they do focus on that all next year…. because while they do that, real NZ’ers will understand two things:
  
  1) No change in Nats policy and direction, so popular status quo on that front (it’s not all about Key that has National on 50%). This has already been signalled by Bill English.
  
  2) Lack of vision and policy by Labour. If they’re determined to continue to play personalities over substance, it will backfire.
  
  Kiwis will go to the ballot box knowing exactly who National are, what they stand for, and what they offer. Labour will have been so distracted, no one in their right mind will vote for an unknown quantity.

    And how did exactly that approach go for Hillary?
    
    Her policy platform was as light as Trump’s was obscured (by the MSM). In the end – US voters rejected the “no change from Obama’s crap” policy platform Hillary was peddling.
    
    National has moved so far Left (in Key’s crusade to extinguish Labour by assimilation) that the Centre is wide open. Winnie is going to get a Key dividend in 2017 because of this failure of strategy.
    
    The electorates views have drifted a few degrees to the Right and a ‘steady as she goes’ drift to the Left is irrational.
    
    National need to renew. And I don’t mean the pathetic crop of wetties brought in by Key (Chris Bishop excepted) – and I certainly don’t mean chardonnay socialists like Leggett.
    
    English has already shown he has no idea how to renew a party – he was woeful in 2002. Collins is the only one who has the chutzpah to do what’s needed and re-invigorate the tired old 3rd term party to save us from the crazies on the Left.
    
    The electorate is bored of National. It’s only that Labour are so cataclysmically bad at the moment that they can survive. Giving them ‘the same old same old’ is not going to excite the electorate. They need to see the vision for the 2020s not a return to the 2000s.

    See above – the world changed this year.
    
    Cuckservative, virtue-signalling Labour-light politics is so 2015. NZ National is not insulated from needing to respond to these changes.
    
    We are seeing all the same societal indicators here that played out in the UK and the US:
    – trust in the liberal MSM at an all time low
    – greater concern about immigration (ie Winnie’s rising in the polls)
    – rejection of the fallacies of globalisation (TPP opposition)
    – cherishing of traditional national values (the flag referendum)
    – rejection of identity politics and PC BS (WOBH has the highest blog site traffic by a mile)
    – political classes increasingly out of touch (DPF’s Trump Derangement Syndrome is a perfect example)
    
    So yes – Collins was the ‘adjustment towards the centre’ candidate that would have shown National was more attuned to the shifts we’ve been watching and chuckling about all year in world politics.

On the Trump front, he needs to only follow existing law to get the border wall(s) finished.

      Do read Ann Coulter’s entire column, she makes that point very well. She also makes the point that this is the one issue where Trump will have the most opposition including from the Republicans in Congress. But it is an issue where he actually does not need their support, all he needs to do is stick to his guns.

I actually think it would be good for Simon Bridge’s to become Deputy Leader because it will ramp up the animosity that Winston Peter’s will have for him and show NZ’s how vindictive the man is. Winston will be pissed that another National MP will have the chance to bury his ambition to be Prime Minister and become the first Maori to obtain the prized job.

Paula needs another 5 years to brush up on her vocabulary, which often exposes her humble beginnings. Cannabis-specic initiatives
It is clear that while there are potential risks to health associated with cannabis use,
these are relatively low compared with other drugs. The currently legal drugs alcohol
and tobacco carry much greater risks. We believe the regulatory approach to cannabis
should be similar to that regulating alcohol supply in some respects, but could be
considerably improved in others.
A.
Cannabis for personal use
1.
The Green Party will make cannabis
legal for personal
use:
a.
Possession and personal use of cannabis and/or cannabis products will no
longer be illegal;
b.
Cultivation for personal use will no longer be illegal;
c.
New Zealand can assess the evidence from overseas jurisdictions with
legal cannabis markets to determine the best model for New Zealand;
d.
A legal age limit for personal cannabis use will be introduced;
e.
The current law around driving under the inCuence of cannabis will be
replaced with one that is based on cannabinoid levels that correlates with
impairment;
f.
Education will be provided on the harmful e1ects of heavy and prolonged
usage, and the risks to mental and emotional wellbeing from cannabis
use for certain individuals.
g.
Cannabis would be specically included in the provisions of the
16-Nov-2016 Ratied Drug Law Reform Policy
2
Smokefree Environments Act.
B. Medical cannabis
Pharmaceuticals which use active ingredients from the cannabis plant are being
researched around the world, and we can expect that some of them will eventually
qualify for licensing as medications in new Zealand. People with a terminal illness,
or
chronic or debilitating
condition
may wish to experiment with use of cannabis products
to relieve their symptoms before a relevant cannabis-based pharmaceutical has
reached the stage of being licensed for use.
While awaiting broader law change for cannabis, the Green Party will:
1.
Remove penalties for any person with a terminal illness, or chronic or
debilitating condition to cultivate, possess or use cannabis and/or cannabis
products for therapeutic purposes, provided they have the support of a
registered medical practitioner.
This exemption would also apply to any
immediate relative or other nominated person for a person with such a
diagnosis, for the sole purpose in terms of administering or supplying cannabis
or its related products to the person.
2.
Accelerate the process by which medical cannabis products are licensed for use
by directing MedSafe to consider the establishment of category-based classes
for common compositions of medical cannabis products. This would expedite
accreditation for cannabis-based medicines whose chemical compositions are
commonly recurrent, and streamline the approval process for medicines seeking
to apply for PHARMAC funding.
3.
Encourage MedSafe to carry out extensive ongoing monitoring of any new and
approved cannabis-based medicines to ensure that they meet acceptable
standards of safety, quality and e@cacy; and that medical practitioners have
reliable information about the selection and safe use of these products when
prescribing them.
4.
Lower barriers for manufacturers to submit new cannabis products for funding
applications to PHARMAC so that evidence can be quickly gathered for the
e@cacy of particular cannabis-based medicine classes, and manufacturers of
cannabis-based medicines have timely and high-quality advice regarding what
is sought and what is working

  And nor does cannabis have potential risks to health. It has actual risks to health.
  
  Moreover, focusing solely on the health risks is dangerous. NZ has whole regions and communities blighted socially and economically by cannabis use.

    Prohibition creates even more social disruption than the drug use alone would .

  Because the muslims in the hospital have made such a fuss (and so many threats) that the H’board caved in and, not wishing to ‘offend’ them gave them their own special place. Many Hospitals have a non-denominational / interfaith ‘chapel’ for patients and visitors to use, BUT islam is so full of its own self-importance (aka ‘arrogance’) that these facilities are simply not good enough. ‘Special People’ have ‘special requirements’ which is why you see this situation occurring.
  
  Rest assured BTW, that this also happens in New Zealand, and not only in hospitals…

  There is a debate at the moment about the use of hospital chapels and them being for all faiths. Personally I think they should be Christian chapels and be done with it.
  However if you have a number of Muslims do you have to provide them with some kind of private prayer room? Or do you let them use the chapel? It’s a difficult problem quite frankly. Not quite sure what the solution is?

    2 problems with your replies stephieboy – the Muslims are in Rome and they certainly don’t do what Romans do. They just do what they do and expect us to accommodate them. Which is wrong, they should try and fit in with us, seeing as they are over here. But they don’t because they believe Islam is the final revelation of religion and in the name of Allah they should turn whatever country they are in into a Muslim country. Including New Zealand.
    
    Secondly chapels in hospitals historically were provided as ecumenical chapels for people of different denominations, but still Christian. Now the pressure is to make them inter-faith with other religions which causes problems. I certainly don’t want Muslims praying in the Hospital Chapel. That’s why some sort of quiet room in addition to a chapel might be a good option. The Muslims could use that.

    Umm – because many people are not infidels. Hospitals recognise the need for spiritual care. Indeed our chaplain here in Masterton and chaplains all around New Zealand in hospitals have as part of their job description to sit with people who are dying and comfort them during that time. Sadly in this secular age many people are alone and die alone. But the church provides chaplains to comfort them and to show them that they are not alone and that God is with them.
    
    That’s why public hospitals provide facilities for this “spiritual nonsense” as you so charmingly put it.

The key here is defence attorney. He should know if client is guilty. His father always knew Arthur Thomas was innocent as I understand it.

Most lawyers with Temm’s experience may have a view on whether or not their client should have been found guilty, but precious few would ever claim to know whether they are guilty or not. The reality is that the only person who actually knows is the client and most of the time, they aren’t telling.

        Michael Reed assuredly knew David Bain was innocent and the wretched Michael Guest was fooled by the cops in the first trial.
        This Winders case will become interesting if Paul Temm states Winder is innocent, he is appealing.
        There are two solid positions emerging, I don’t claim to know of course, it takes a bit of work to figure it, but what the cops say is largely irrelevant, ask Thomas, Tamihere, Pora, Bain, Lundy and MacDonald.

        Apparently the judgement is strong in implicating Winders. I think this case is intriguing, nothing fits. As a plan it is an Egrade fail, noone thinks he can do this crime undetected. But a young gang member has a far better chance than a loner from Kings College. That is the way of things.     Since the kid is ten years old there’s probably quite a good chance of sorting him out. This is one of those cases where spending time & money may have a positive outcome.
