This family seem like nice enough people, but they decided to come here because taxpayers provide better disability care than in their home country.

NZ should only accept immigrants who benefit us, and not the other way around.

These words should be graven in stone on the office walls of every Minister of Immigration.

So the Nurses Union says people will die because the Government has canned the Dunedin Hospital rebuild in its present form. Shane Reti has said that the money overinvested in the canned proposal will be more effectively applied in other hospital development works. Now, surely this will save lives – probably significantly more lives than any extra lives lost because of the canning of the present Dunedin project.
If the Union was consistent in its approach it would have argued that the ‘ppp’ building proposal which was under way when Labour came into office in 2017 should have been allowed to take its course since canning it and starting over would also costs lives. But then ideology trumps human lives.
Dunedin and its Labour politicians have only themselves to blame over this. Let them stew in their own juices.

    Bridge: Yes…as the great Maggy Thatcher said, Yes Minister was a documentary not a comedy…and note Sir Humphrey’s final line” “I shall have a word with the health unions, but I don’t hold out much hope”.
    
    While England had “unionitis” much much worse than we did in the 70’s, no-one under about age 55 can remember just how much power the unions here had back in the day.
    
    I once almost caused a strike on the methanol construction project in Taranak back in 1983. I picked up and moved a strop so my welder would have better access to a pipe joint. I was sternly told that that was “riggers work” and I must not do it again.
    
    Those under about 40 reading this will think I made that up – I didn’t.

      No fully believe that. As a young officer I was on a team to visit short brothers who were converting a missile system, SeaCat , to a land system tigercat. We went to see and asses the wooden mock-up . The rails that the loader had to slide the missile down were too long and meant the 97 pound missile had to be lifted above head height. The answer was simple , the rails needed shortening by about 18 inches. It was a Friday afternoon and the workers were on an early weekend
      
      Rather than waste time I did the mod. What do you know, instant strike and refusal to work anymore until I apologised in writing.

      In 1989 I was on an exercise around Martinborough to search for a murderer who had left communications that he was going bush to top himself. I found his getaway bike, but it became apparent that his tracks doubled-back into town, he hadn’t topped himself and it was still a manhunt not a body search, so us civilians were called off and we repaired to the Martinborough pub.
      
      There we downed a few with some Wellington wharfies, one of whom regaled us with stories about his cushy number. His job was to open crates. On his days off he would inevitably get a call that a crate needed opening (nobody else would do it as it’s his job) so he would get a call, would jump into his wagon in Martinborough, nip into Wellie, pull out his crowbar, open the crate, jump back into his wagon and head back home – all on triple time.
      
      I was with a couple of Wainuioru farmers, both excellent bushmen and deer stalkers hence us being used as trackers, and I could see the bile rising in them and so we finished our drinks and left.
      
      I’ve never looked at unions and wharfies etc the same way since.

  I find the media , left , health unions etc outrage over this to be rank hypocrisy .
  
  They were all fully on board shutting down the whole health system , nay country , for the scamdemic .
  
  How many died for that , how many had life saving / improving surgery treatment cancelled /deferred.
  
  Not to mention all the other dreadful and still unquantifiable consequences of that madness .
  
  Of which this is arguably one , due the wasted spending of the regime , inflation ,budget blowouts etc

  I doudt few would disagree about Israels right to defend itself but many may be concerned about how offensive it has taken its defence. Israel is in a very difficult position as it has to live with the surrounding countries eventually.

  I now have zero trust nor respect for Netanyahu. The more I read/watch/listen to him the more convinced I am that he is a significant part of the problem. That does not mean I have any respect nor trust for the radical Islamists either. The region now has a high chance that it will go up in a bloodbath of flames in a ‘forever war’. He commented “will David Seymour next demand that schools teach the economics of Milton Friedman?” I commented that schools already do that as he created modern monetary economics. My comment quickly vanished. 😂

        Good on you Ben, for taking one for the team. I used to comment on the Standard back in Clark’s day, but was banned after providing Treasury information on the structural deficit that Labour left for National in 2008. There was a poster “Colonial Viper” (apparently a Labour Party functionary in Dunedin) who used to call for “Tories” to be lined up against a wall and shot (among other egregious shit) and yet continued to be allowed to post comments as well as articles. I wouldn’t cross the road to piss on most of the people who populate the Standard if they were on fire.

        Bene: Off topic, but I had a lovely dinner last night with my very switched on daughter, age 23. The conversation turned to 9 year old kids being taken seriously when they announced that they were in the wrong body, and wanted to convert to the other gender.
        
        She agreed with me that such nonsense is hugely dangerous – but said that among her peer group, her view is very much in the minority – and she attracts adverse reactions because she voices it.

  The number of half days prescribed for secondary and composite schools is 380 half days every year.
  Your school may close from time to time for:
  teacher preparation
  teacher-only days
  in-service training days
  local events including local gala or show days.
  As your school is not open for instruction on these days, you must ensure you make up for any closures by December 20 in order to meet the requirements of the prescribed number of half days in a year.
  State and state-integrated schools must be closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Easter Tuesday (a school holiday).

    Given the extremely poor results coming out of the state education sector , they are worse than a “baby sitting” service , which at least would be providing some good.
    
    The sector soaks up a huge amount of our hard earned taxes , for what ‘outcome”.

    Teacher-only days, not to mention trade union meetings, should take place during the school holidays, without exception.
    
    Any school days thus freed up could be used in a more productive fashion. Visiting the art gallery. Volunteering at the local resthome. Weed removal on public land that the Council has chosen not to. These are all valid learning experiences.

      Effectively teachers only days are held during holidays if you understand the directives from the Department of Education
      Plus
      Members of the Post Primary Teacher’s Association (PPTA) and the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) are entitled to attend at least 2 paid union meetings per year.
      During these meetings, the board must make arrangements to ensure that the school remains open for instruction.
      You might not like the arrangement, but there you are.

    I just love the union propaganda machine. Many TODs are excruciatingly bad and a waste of everyone’s time. And often very expensive.
    Adding days at the end of the year (who actually does this?) is a waste of time too. High schools are half empty with the seniors on study leave even though many of them have no exams or very few. Study leave can begin early in the last term so the junior classes rattle round watching movies, having sports days, occupying themselves, while teachers do end of year admin and jobs. So another day or so is meaningless at the end of the year.
    Either make the school day longer so teachers plan and mark until 5pm and/or shift all professional development into the holidays. Most teachers enjoy weeks of vacation time free of schoolwork despite the unions telling us they are beavering away.
    It’s time teaching became a professional job with professional hours so good teachers don’t find the job is taking over their lives while bad teachers loaf around.

  Teacher only days seem to happen on Fridays before a long weekend, or on Fridays before school holidays start. Funny that.
  It simply allows the teachers to get away to the beach before the mad rush on Friday afternoon or evening.
  Count the cars in the teacher carparks.

    Absolutely true. Used to live in a holiday town and nextdoor was a weekender owned by a teacher. He came from about 2 1/2 hours drive away, and was there in the afternoon of last day of term and stayed until the night before school started again. This was happening for at least the several years that I lived there

I worked in admin at a high school. A lot of what the teachers say they do on TODays are rubbish. I’ve witnessed, and even joined them, at the pub for the afternoon after a morning meeting. As for all the claims about working through the holidays, Many of them were off on extensive trips, some worked at secondary jobs and only a small few ever set foot in the school except maybe for a day or two before the new term started. Most people are also probably not aware that teachers of senior students will be effectively on holiday a couple of weeks into term 4 when the students go on study leave for NCEA. That is a mighty long break until February.

This is from the Red Radio report Matt Long alerts us to, under the subheading “what are teacher-only days for?”:

This could cover te whare tapa whā – a model of student wellbeing developed by Sir Mason Durie in 1984 – as well as tikanga, te reo and subject-specific approaches to te ao Māori.

My estimates of the Cost to Hastings ratepayers of paying Student Councilors and Iwi Advisers.

My understanding is payment for Student (some as young as 15) Councilors is $400 per meeting and there are 17 of them..

Lets say they meet once a month that equates to $6,800 a month X 12 equals about $70,000 a year assuming 12 meetings.

Iwi Advisers are almost certainly adults so have probably negotiated a higher meeting fee – say $600 per meeting x say 10 advisers (I don’t know the number) equals another $70,000 plus a year.

So say the guts of $150,000 a year impost on ratepayers already kicked in the guts with a 19% rates rise.

One further thing – this would not have been disclosed to Hastings District Ratepayers had Stuff not got wind of the rort.

  They are youth councilors not student and the age limit is 17. Furthermore they have asked not to be paid.
  They have voting rights on subcommittees which advise the council.

Minister of Education Erica Stanford announced on Thursday that funding for Te Ahu o te Reo, a programme dedicated to supporting teachers in learning te reo Māori, has been cut by $30 million.
Stanford said this money was needed for math workbooks, guidance, and lesson plans for the 2025 school year, and the funds had to be sourced from somewhere.
Ākonga Māori (Māori students) from Te Kura Kōhine o te Rāwhiti o te Upoko o te Ika/ Wellington East Girls’ College penned a “protest letter” to Stanford, expressing their anger at the decision.
“Having strong te reo Māori kaiako (teachers) in our school is important to our learning in all subjects, because our te reo Māori- speaking teachers connect with us in a different way.”
“We need people to pass te reo Māori on in every environment,” they said.

Israeli Air Force jets hammer Beirut, and, says the Wall Street Journal they are out to kill Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The newspaper says Nasrallah oversaw Hezbollah’s transformation into the world’s most heavily armed nonstate militia and its integration into Lebanon’s political system.

The attack came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Dozens of diplomats walked out when it was announced Netanyahu would be next to speak.

Did NZ’s diplomats walk out?

I was reading this morning about the The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in China. It is the world’s highest road bridge. It will open next year after only three years construction.

  Luxon probably does understand the scale of the problem but is unwilling or unable to make the necessary changes.
  A bigger problem is that most of the population don’t appreciate how seriously bad our situation is. Combine that with the growing tendency for kiwis to expect the government to solve all their problems and it could be that the country as we knew it has gone.

  As a friend says, the National Party hasn’t had it’s “come to Jesus” moment – the point at religious crusades at which people are converted.
  
  This conversion being to the pressing need for New Zealand to transform its economy, and transform it radically.
  
  Things could be worse… if we had a National-only Government without ACT and NZ First. Or worse than that if we had a Labour-Maori Party-Green coalition running these islands.

Just watched this YT vid about the results of some long term UBI study in the USA.
1000 people were given $1000/month for 3 years and the control group (2000 people) were given $50/month.
Guess which group wound up less wealthy at the end. Guess how much that $1000/month improved loan delinquency etc. Did they improve their work skills, or simply work less? Did they educate themselves?
How were the results portrayed by the media? Did they focus on the fact that the group that was given $1000/month wound up less wealthy than the other group, or did they say that the UBI group went to the dentist 10% more?
No prizes will be handed out for guessing correctly.

Bearing Witness to October 7
It is close to a year since the terror attacks of October 7 occurred and not a day has passed since then when its effects have not been felt around the world.

The first anniversary of the October 7 attacks by Hamas against Israel is approaching, and not a day since has passed when the consequences and after-shocks of that terrible day have not been felt around the world. More than any other event in living memory, it has polarised and divided people everywhere.
Eight weeks after the attacks, I was invited to the Israeli Embassy in Wellington to watch the 47 minutes of footage compiled by the Israeli Government called “Bearing Witness”. It represents only a fraction of the 150,000 video clips collected by Israel from webcam footage, phones, security cameras and other recording devices that were operating that day.
The Embassy invited approximately 60 people from New Zealand media to attend – 12 of us accepted. I have set out below what I saw – it is not intended to be partisan but simply an account of what happened that day and my impressions as an observer.
Did watching “Bearing Witness” alter any of my opinions? Yes, it did.

Thank you for sharing this. Too many of those demonstrating against Israel that I’ve spoken to refuse to believe the atrocities of Oct 7, 2023. Even though it was Hamas’ own cameras that recorded them. They also deny that “from the river to the sea” means “kill Jews.” The depths of their refusal to accept facts is so appalling. And it’s shameful so many “journalists” appear to be among them.

This isn’t a criminal gang operating from within a community – it is Gaza versus Israel. War and of course there have been awful consequences. Is it the words that are the cause of hurt, or is it the reactions of others because they disagree with your words?
If the words are true , is it the words that hurt or the fact that you know they are the truth?
Is this part of the reason that the ‘debate’ about freedom of speech is so problematic?
The fact that the internet enables you to become part of the ‘mob’ when objecting to someone else’s point of view.
