In the interim the government intends to either remove Te Mana o te Wai or rebalance it to ‘better reflect the interests of all water users” this year. Te Mana o te Wai, meaning the mana of the water, was introduced in 2020 allowing Councils when deciding on a matter relevant to freshwater, such as consents and developing freshwater management plans, to prioritise:
• first, the health and wellbeing of water bodies and freshwater ecosystems
• second, the health needs for people, such as drinking water
• third, the ability of people and communities to provide for their social, economic, and cultural well-being, now and in future.

Cost blow out due to added cycle path. Toll the cyclists!

(Simeon) Brown told RNZ the 11.5 kilometre highway over the Ruahine Range was now expected to cost $824.1 million, up from the $620m budgeted when construction began four years ago.

The cost blow-out is due to a number of factors, including the high inflationary environment, supply chain issues, and the previous government’s late addition of a shared user path across the length of the project.

“This affected the Parahaki River Bridge design, increasing the complexity and cost of the structure.”

  It is not within her personal powers to ‘sell off’ these items. She has to work within Cabinet and Caucus for any proposal to sell off Government agencies.

    Reducing debt and debt costs is a good thing, especially when the revenue from the asset is less then the interest on the debt.
    
    I agree there is a high degree of danger a coucil might either not pay down debt or might use the reduced level of debt for a fresh round of borrowing. However the premise that paying down debt has minimal debt is part of the reason the councils and governments have gone on a debt fueled rampage at our expense.

  WCC should sell them and reinvest in a less risky fund or select shares
  Wgtn airport risk is it’s value could sink drastically overnight in the event of an earthquake or other natural event. WCC does not have insurance that covers such events for the airport and so the value of their share holding would sink rapidly with such an event with no way to recover the loss. If they did sell, no way could they be left to use it for anything else but investment such as with govt retirement fund or similar for a rainy day.

      There was talk of this punchup being set up so the TV channels could make news.

    People seem not to understand that modern police forces are based on the idea of “policing by consent”. The idea goes back to Sir Robert Peel who founded the British police in the 19th Century. It is about police conducting themselves such that the public views the police force as legitimate. It does not mean police must constantly be seeking “consent” from whoever they interact with when doing police work.

Auckland Council’s choice for Watercare Chairman has been thrown out by the High Court, due to action taken by the statutary Maori advisory board that had recommended a Maori candidate be chosen.
“Houkura, the independent Māori statutory board, had challenged the original 25 June decision, arguing it was procedurally unlawful.

In the application for judicial review, chair David Taipari said a panel had unanimously recommended a Māori candidate for the role, but the appointments committee has agreed Williamson’s amendment behind closed doors.”
Partnerships are complicated things.

  The “Maori Statutory Board” is worse than Maori Wards. They are not elected they are appointed and given 2 seats with voting rights.. And Maori are then free to also vote in teh regular electorate
  
  Further, while a councillor candidate can’t have more than $25k of contracts or they can’t be elected. Maori elected members have signficant financial interests for their iwi but they go through trusts rather than companies.

  That’s a little ambiguous.
  
  It’s not clear to me whether the Maori Board recommended that a Maori is appointed to the role, or that the Maori Board had a preferred candidate and that he or she is Maori – but I suspect the former.
  
  If it were the former, isn’t that discriminatory? Wouldn’t that offend against the principles of our Equal Employment Opportunities legislation, where all applicants, internal and external, are to be given a fair and equal crack?
  
  It was this point which finally set me against the Equal Opportunities Commissioner Karanina Sumeo who, to the best of my knowledge, didn’t speak up against the Ardern government’s appointment of Louisa Wall to the Pacific Gay Ambassador role as payola for her stepping down from Parliament. They just created the role for her and didn’t let anyone else apply for it – a clear contravention of our equal opportunity laws. And all, of course, paid for by the taxpayer.
  
  Clearly unlawful and corrupt in my view – and Karanina Sumeo didn’t say a word against it even though this was in her purview. Got to look after your mates I guess.

    I’m really at a loss here. I just do not understand how after decades of (rightly) stamping out structural racism in this country, the very same people seem intent on reintroducing it!

I thought Coster was supposed to be bright. Saying his proudest moment was breaking up the parliament protest which include more than a few of his own officers was utterly stupid. Why didn’t he just say his greatest achievement was rainbow crossings or something generic like that and ride off into the sunset?

    We’ve seen the Democrat lies and fabrications unravel again and again and again, while huge evidence of deep corruption by Biden (Burisma and $10’s of millions in payments to his do-nothing family) and Clinton (deleting subpoenaed emails, making 100’s of millions from her stint as secretary of state by approving weapons sales in return for colossal speaking fees for Bill Clinton etc) is given a complete free-pass.     No Trump wont pardon himself, as he has currently not been found guilty of any Federal Crime (the ones a president can pardon). He 100% will order the DOJ (who the president is boss of) to end all investigations and cases against himself, as any sane person would do.
    
    Biden will pardon Hunter, even though he explictly said he wouldn’t, either himself or through Kamala. Also the sort of thing a father might do for his son. He shouldn’t have lied about not doing it though.

      Actually a president can pardon someone before they are convicted of a crime – the pre-emotive pardon addresses situations where the view is there no point in waiting until a combustion. If you were going to pardon them anyway.

So more foot in mouth disease from Mayor Tory when she says she took the job because she thought there’d be less scrutiny in the mayoral role. So did she think she could just swan in and have an easy time of it? What does that say about her, that she shouldn’t be held to account or have to work hard and be an example for Wellington 24 hours each day. If you are elected to be a Mayor or politician expect to be under scrutiny all the time.

  No, the three mayors I know (one of whom is a woman) did their leadership homework before committing to stand for election to mayor. All were experienced elected councillors prior.
  It seems Ms Whanau had no idea what she was getting into – the levels of work and commitment involved and expected.
  I recall at the time of the elections, her supporters and minders were frequently on Wgn newstalkzb promoting her and claiming she would be an excellent Green mayor.
  As it has turned out – shame about Ms Whanau’s non-existent leadership skills.

  Interesting that Whanau and her councillors are considering breaking the law by not holding a referendum. Ratepayers will, of course, pay any fine.
  Whanau is apparently taking advice from local Maori activists.
  Of course that assumes the judiciary/Waitangi Tribunal don’t side with her and defy the Govt.

  Along the same lines, did anyone see the NZ Heralds article yesterday about How to talk to your kids about sex. No it wasn’t written by a child psychologist or a parent. The article was written by a person who described herself as a sex coach, then sex therapist. But they don’t have a degree in psychotherapy. And their “about me page on their website contains no qualifications at all.
  
  Her web page describes her as a “Sex and Libido Coach”. as featured on RNZ, Stuff and Duncan Garner. And their are courses on improving your foreplay.
  
  Ok. All good. But why is Sofie Louise writing an article in the Herald when she has a sex business. It’s not independent journalism. Does she pay to have these articles in the Herald? And what qualifies her to advise us on child appropriate sex information. Is she a parent even?

    A better question is this: Do you have the faintest idea of the part oil – that dreadful fossil fuel – plays in our everyday life? I am prepared to bet you don’t have a clue, beyond its most obvious uses.
    
    But it may surprise you that I agree with those who say we shouldn’t be burning it in cars and trucks. It is far far too valuable a fluid for such a prosaic use – but despite your Green fantasies, it will be a transport fuel for years to come, possibly even decades.
    
    We have already seen the severe – limitations – of EV’s, including them blowing up without warning in fires which cannot be extinguished using existing methods. There are apparently millions of them on car lots in China, which are unsaleable at any price. Canny chaps those Chinese; always have been.

      Prime Minister Luxon has now commented on the ANZ Bank executive’s view on capital gains tax for NZ.
      
      He is reported:
      
      “I love it that the CEO of a big bank from Australia wants to take more money off New Zealanders.”
      
      AND:
      
      “You don’t tax your way out of a recession. You grow your way out of a recession.”
      
      AND:
      
      “As a former CEO, I understand what she’s doing… the big Australian banks make a lot of money off the New Zealand public, and I would just suggest to her that maybe taking more money off New Zealanders isn’t the road forward.”
      
      In fairness to the banker, banks don’t get money off New Zealanders with capital gains tax, the Government gets it.

    That trailer is brilliant. A lot of design. I made a few for moving the tiny houses, but because of the weight nobody want to pay for all of the fancy braking system (3500kg GVM) Don’t know what they do now, gave up on them.

    Actually I see the announcement Fonterra is now running profitably and has exhausted it taxable losses, but I don’t see from what date the losses accrued. I know they had issues during the financial crisis and shockingly bad China investments.

  SO, people have been asking for almost 4 years why do the Dems turn a blind eye on the Southern Border? It is plainly obvious they want these votes despite what lasting damage is inflicted on the US by letting in all manner of criminals and pedos. In their sheer desperation for votes the Dems have pretty much destroyed America. The MSM keep mum about the suffering many States are experiencing by wandering illegals, who in some cases murder farmers and attack citizens in their homes. Those doddery Senators and Congress members will one day soon have to deal with the crime creeping into their comfortable residential areas.

It’s about time to stop spending taxpayers’ money on promoting Te Reo.

The latest results from StatsNZ’s General Social Survey show that, even amongst Māori, proficiency in the language is decreasing.

In 2023, 11% of Māori said they could speak the language well or very well, compared to 13 in 2021.

And 15% said they could speak the language fairly well in 2023, compared to 19% in 2021.

The money would be better spent on promoting proficiency in Mandarin or Spanish.

  For this to be true, some – or all- of the following must also be true:
  * Many of the fluent speakers were very old and a significant portion have died in the last 2 years.
  * Young Maori are hopeless at speaking “their” language – despite all the millions spent on immersion schools etc.
  * Maori is a useless language of no practical value that is easy to forget.
  
  I grew up in a multi-lingual society speaking English (first language) , Afrikaans and Zulu and Xhosa. I have lived outside of South Africa for over 30 years but would still consider my Afrikaans excellent (I can listen to an hour long interview and understand every word). My Zulu and Xhosa are a bit rusty, but I am sure I could pick those up again in a few days if I was motivated.
  
  So, I wonder, why is Maori so difficult for people to engage with?
  
  I suspect it is just another taxpayer funded trough and that there is little real interest in generating results.

      Partially, yes.
      Afrikaans was partially forced upon me, but it was also highly useful. Many English speaking South Africans struggle to speak Afrikaans and cannot do so fluently.
      
      Yes, we were forced to learn Afrikaans from Y3 to Y12, but the language you learn at school is pretty dismal (especially where I went to school: Natal). For example, even after 10 years of getting Afrikaans lessons many conscripts into the Army couldn’t understand Afrikaans well – especially those of us who grew up in Natal where Afrikaans speakers are relatively rare.
      
      I did very poorly at Afrikaans at school (being dyslexic didn’t help), but I spent some university holidays in predominantly Afrikaans areas (eg. Witbank) immersed in Afrikaans and learned more there. I also did my university in Cape Town where most Cape Coloured people speak Afrikaans. Then 2 years in the Army where I chose to speak Afrikaans pretty much all the time.
      
      In South Africa in the 1980s the majority of Afrikaans speakers (white, coloured or black) struggled to speak English and I found it easier to communicate with them in Afrikaans.
      
      I learned Zulu and Xhosa because the Zulu and Xhosa people I interacted with knew no other languages. It was reasonably common for white (nominally English speaking) farm families to speak Zulu at home a lot of the time. One kid I knew could hardly speak a word of English by the time he went to school.
      
      All those languages have utility because there are millions of people who speak them (and do not speak other languages). Those that have not learned to speak English well are stuck in a time warp – mainly in rural areas.
      
      Maori is not like that at all. Very few people can speak Maori well (eg. well enough to go through a day conversing only in Maori) and there are probably less than a bus full of people who can only speak Maori.
      
      It’s not useful, therefore people will not learn it.

        My Grandfather (who died before I was born) spoke Afrikaans. He came to NZ from Capetown before WW1.
        My Dad never spoke it, the language was not carried on – although Dad did say a few swear words that I did not understand!

    My mother recalls meeting people back in the 1970s who had grown up speaking Maori for whom English had been a second language – the youngest were well into their fourties and most were considerably older. Anyone alive who claims to be a fluent speaker is usually lying or grossly overestimating their proficiency.
    
    One of my cousins has been to immersion schools for his entire school life. He is most certainly not fluent and is never likely to be, English is what he speaks whenever he’s not in school. This is doesn’t bother anyone because the language is only wanted for ceremonial reasons, there is no real desire on anyone’s part to use it as their kitchen tongue.
    
    I should add that no attempt was made to get his sister competent in the language. Because as we’ve established, it’s only wanted as a ceremonial language so the priority is always teaching it to boys so they can use it in their speeches. If they actually wanted it preserved as a living language then teaching it to girls would be the first priority so they could in turn pass it on to their children, but that’s not what’s happening.
    
    Saving the Maori language is an excellent business though – the worse you do at it, the more funding you can ask for. All incentives are toward failure.

    Having Maori forced on everyone has been the perfect example of shooting yourself in the foot. Let’s be absolutely honest about this. Nobody likes to be forced to do something and being forced builds up resentment. How many non maori have been obliged to listen to endless speeches and waiata which they don’t understand and nor does anybody else in the room. It is bloody insulting. It’s as stupid as having someone address the room in Polish or Chinese. My grand children have to learn Maori at school, I have told them that when they have a choice they should learn another language that is actually useful to them, Maori isn’t, unless of course you aspire to being a civil servant,

  I recently witnessed an interesting interaction between a couple of young Maori mums. They started out well, with kia ora etc and chatted a bit in Maori. Then things got a bit heated and they both quickly reverted to English and threw insults at each other.
  I guess the English swear words are more effective!

An investigator says a cop should be charged for pursuing a criminal which lead to the criminal killing herself.

Bullshit. All the criminal had to do was stop and the pursuit would have been over.

The family claim the pursuit was “callous” and “senseless”.

“He said the ultimate goal of any pursuit was to minimise harm to everyone involved”. With one less crim on the streets that was probably be achieved.

It amazes me how families like this refuse to acknowledge the part their criminal children play in their own deaths and other poor outcomes. I suppose a lifetime of being bailed out will help make kids turn out like this.

  Investigations ongoing and yet they trot out this “expert” who essentially blames the Cop for the death of a young woman .
  
  Who as you say simply didn’t have to “flee”.
  
  At no point does the article reiterate , as it should if they want to pretend to be educating ( we get enough of the “if you’re affected by” b/s at the end of so many stories) folk , instead of just being really vindictive and nasty , ‘hey don’t break the law , stop for blue lights / sirens …….who knows , it could save your life or someone else’s’ .

* Jill Biden will throw her hat in the ring.

Jill seems to have been doing all she can to raise her profile:
* Sitting in on cabinet meetings – at the cabinet table.
* Having the Marine Band play a specially composed “Fanfare for the First Lady”.
* Interjecting and being an obvious aide to Joe showing she wears the pants.

This suggests to me someone keen for office.

She’s 73. She will be 77 in 2028 – so reasonably young by modern standards.

Why does the wokery continue in our country? Because we vote for woke politicians and that’s regardless of what party they stand for – most of the MPs agree on most of the cultural issues. There are never any serious attempts at reversing this wokery.

Case in point, Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden has announce a change in law which mean same-sex parents will be able to decide to use “father”, “mother” or “parent” on a child’s birth certificate. I was always under the impression that a birth certificate was the child’s birth certificate rather than the parents. Further, there are no such thing as “same-sex parents”, it requires a man and a woman to have a baby – maybe Brook van Velden never got the “birds and bees” talk from her parents.
