Of the 9351 hate incidents reported between January 2022 and January 2024, more than a third targeted people of Asian descent, followed by 8.9 percent aimed at people of colour and 7.2 percent targeting Maori.
Auckland had more than 3700 cases reported, the highest among all major centres, followed by Canterbury and Wellington, both with about 11,000 incidents reported.

The first sentence there says 9,351 incidents.
The following second sentence then says Auckland 3700 cases, but does “both with” mean “Canterbury and Wellington” 11,000 incidents each or between them, so total incidents are 14,700 or 25,700 incidents in all.

When reporting is so errant, it strongly discourages one from reading any further.

But the second last sentence of the article says –
However, the minister would not comment on the latest data on hate incidents and Asian communities being overwhelming targeted, saying these matters are “operational”.
– which makes me wonder:
• How is such a general statement “operational”, and
• Is data recorded of any cultural identity of the haters as well as that of the hated?
If Asian communities, as a group, are being overwhelming targeted, who is doing the targeting?

perhaps relevant information : population portions – 70.2% European (3,297,860 people) 16.5% Māori (775,840 people) 15.1% Asian (707,600 people) 8.1% Pacific peoples (381,640 people) – if it is not “operational”

Sure, make a museum that erases history and pretends that Maoris were a kind, loving and technologically advanced race if you want, but why does it have to be instead of what we have currently?

Why must Maori everything be promoted in favour of everything else to satisfy the 5 percent? Most maoris want to learn actual history, not a fluffed up version of how to think.

  I was so disappointed visiting Auckland’s museum last year. Hadn’t been for many years and had loved the early NZ displays of the British immigrants clothes, tools household stuff etc. Where has it all gone? It appears it is now a museum of Maori culture only

    Totally agree, Flossie. I was there last week and shocked. If it wasn’t for the colonisers there would be no museum. Walking into the museum now you would be led to believe no non-maori inhabit this land. What a bloody disgrace. Who are these people who come up with these virtue signaling whacky ideas? I grieve the loss of my culture from the museum. Getting rid of the beloved colonial street was an indication of where they were going.

  The Board, senior management and staff need to be reminded in no uncertain terms of the name and purpose of the Auckland Museum. The museums official name is the Auckland War Memorial Museum and it was built to honour the Servicemen and women of World War 1 and later on to include all servicemen and women of all subsequent wars and conflicts that New Zealand has been involved in. It is not a museum to be maorified by the woke / politically correct board, management and staff. If they want a maori museum they should get some of the treaty settlement money that has been handed out and go and build a maori museum somewhere else and let the current Auckland War Memorial Museum get back to its original purpose and reason for being.

  The whole previous regime appeared to be the worst in history on every front, this crap that Robertson saved us through covid is utter bullshit, as I remember he originally borrowed 4 billion for covid and the wage subsidy was only going to be for small business, to hell with the rest, it took Bridges to say open the flood gates, Robertson then when feral snd borrowed 50 billion which on 25 billion was used in COVID, main question to Robertson is, where did the other 25 billion go.

Hipkins claimed on Hosking this morning that Robertson was a minister “ interrupted “ as was many of his cabinet colleagues and couldn’t achieve half of what he wanted. Hipkins included himself in this intervention by Covid into what would otherwise been the construction of utopia. So there is a case to say that Covid saved the country. Imagine the state of the place if it hadn’t intervened. You see folks every cloud really does have a silver lining.

  Initially I thought woah that’s a bit unusual … but in hindsight perhaps Hikpins was struck by the realisation his team is deserting him?

Excellent interview yesterday by Michael Laws with Hilary Calvert on the Platform on the appointment of Grant Robertson and how that happened. Calvert is a Dunedin local.

Apparently Labour changed the Otago Uni Council mix and put in more government appointments which explains how Robertson got over the line. I was wondering how on earth he could have been appointed after his abysmal track record as finance minister.

It appears that Otago University is a dumping ground for ex Labour Party pollies eg Curran and David Clark.

The implications of turning Otago Uni into a socialist cesspit will have wider consequences for Dunedin with the ensuing drop in enrolments especially from conservative parents who would have been considering Otago for their child. It would be quite concerning for a lot of right leaning Dunedin residents what might happen to Dunedin following Robertson’s appointment.

Will be interesting to see if the Waikato Uni med school for GP’s eventuates. Thus further diminishing Otago uni’s relevance.

Wonder where they can send Chippy? Massey University?? He clearly has no offers on the table.

Anyway the long form interview with Laws and Calvert yesterday on the Platform is well worth a listen. I think parts of it are also on YouTube as well.

  I find Sean Plunket unlistenable due to his arrogance and obvious lack of research combined with his constant overtalking and interrupting of interviewee’s. Michael Laws does have some good interviews and I do particularly enjoy his discussions with Hilary Calvert. Overall, however, The Platform has been a disappointment for me.

    Laws is totally listenable. One of the smartest commentators in the NZ media currently. I make sure I tune in at 10am if I can, or else listen to his interviews later on in the day. His weekly slots with Calvert and Craig Stobo are very interesting and insightful.
    
    Agreed Plunket can be a bit OTT but I commend him for starting up the Platform, otherwise we would be at the mercy of NZME, Stuffed and TV 1 and 3.

  As a Dunedin local and an Otago alumni, I find it very sad that Otago Uni is in such a woke state and it’s only going to get worse with Robertson leading the way. It is already a financial disaster. And their future plans will only make it worse (check out their website, it’s shocking).
  
  The University makes up a huge part of the Dunedin population and economy. There is every chance it will need Govt funding to bail it out, but will the Govt be able to afford that?

      My son is finishing his final year of law at Canterbury and just loves the place. Great choice rouppe – nice rebuilt city, miles cheaper flights than flying to Dunedin, rent much cheaper after first year (if he is in a student hostel), skiing and beaches a heartbeat away. I hope he has a great time … I’m sure my son’s degree (LLB) still stands for ladies, lager and beer 🙂

        Auckland of course always claimed that their law school was better…I used to enjoy reminding Auckland grads that but for one text, ALL the standard texts at all NZ Law Schools were written by Canterbury academics. I’m pretty sure that is still the case.

Having calmed down over the appointment of Grant Robertson to Otago it is both sad and disappointing that he should get that appointment.
I expect the salary will be about $450,000 plus perks similar to others, except Auckland.
Who made the decision to appoint him ?
It is reported that Clare Curren and David Clark are to join him – both being ex Labour failed MPs too.
Otago appears to be effectively bankrupt so it is appropriate that a failed Finance Minister gets the job – he will decimate it further I expect.
He even supersedes Muldoon as a disastrous Finance Minister.
Shame on New Zealand for this stupidity but not sadly surprising.
Herald call that he is leaving Politics – yea, and how does that fit in with the products of our Universities ?

What on earth got into the Labour MP Virginia Andersen this morning on Mike Hosking’s programme?
On Wednesdays she does a gig with Mark Mitchell, the Police Minister, former cop, and former security guy, and grandson of the late Air Commodore Frank Gill, a once-upon-a-time National Party minister.
And this morning she fired cheap broadsides at Mitchell for ‘shooting people’ in Mogadishu.
It really is an astonishing listen.
I suspect this is going to blow up in her face and Labour’s, too.

        Unless he was a gunner on a helicopter or such, he’s unlikely to have shot anyone.
        
        War isn’t like video games and movies.
        
        During WW2 most infantry soldiers (the generally most active sort) shot nobody. Not one.
        
        During WW2 there were over 125 million servicemen in all services on the Allied side. There were about 5 million German military deaths in all services, the vast majority in the army. Therefore your chance of being a “lucky one” that killed a Jerry was, on average about 1 in 25 or 4%.
        
        Of those deaths a large % were caused by bombing and artillery. This heavily skews the stats to a few key people that do most of the killing. Maybe 1.5 to 2 million were actually shot in combat as most people think of it (ie. infantrymen shooting eachother on the battlefield).
        
        So basically that meant 100 million servicemen shot around 1.5 million Germans. Your chance of being a soldier that shot a German during WW2 is around 1 in 60 or less than 2%.
        
        Modern conflicts are not much different other than the increase in helicopters and aerial ground attack. Other than those shooting artillery, bombing or operating machine guns out of helicopter gunships, only very few soldiers actually get to kill anybody.

Furthermore, amid financial strains and calls for modest levy increases, one must question the prudence of diverting scarce resources from the preservation of our war memorials to other causes, however noble they may seem.

This isn’t about resisting progress or denying the importance of environmental or educational initiatives; it’s about honouring a commitment. It’s about ensuring that the sacrifices of our forebears are not just a footnote in a museum that once stood as a beacon of remembrance.

It’s high time the government scrutinizes the museum’s board, the appointment process, and the very Act that seemingly grants funding indefinitely with scant oversight. This unchecked guarantee of perpetual funding, without stringent accountability, undermines the museum’s original mission and the public’s expectations.

  Big gorilla with no neck asked for my entry ticket. I did not buy one. I showed him my Council Rated Demand and told him I pay the wages of everyone here. Then I just pushed past him. He did nothing.
  Once inside it was hard to know if I was in the War Memorial museum or Te Papa.

  Probably more accurate to say that Trump and his lawyers decided not to proceed with an appeal to SCOTUS, and so didn’t file documents before the deadline.
  
  This was in relation to civil lawsuits that have been filed against Trump for the Jan 6 insurrection. Trump had claimed Presidential immunity. The Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit (second highest court in the USA) had ruled that Jan 6 was Trump acting as a Presidential candidate, not as President, and so Presidential immunity didn’t apply. Trump said he was going to appeal that (SCOTUS being the only appeal option) but has evidently decided not to appeal. So the civil lawsuits are back on the docket and will proceed.

  Much is made of people being “radicalised” by these platforms, but I think that’s broken logic. I think it is often that already radicalised people just find some like minded people to discus their ideas with.
  
  Real radicalisation is different. That happens when some disaffected sap gets found, groomed and led into committing some act. Real radicalisation requires some sort of mastermind that radicalises others.

Herald/Newshub report that the Govt is going ahead with their coalition transport projects, despite NZTA estimations they could cost $24 billion more than National’s figures.

“It estimated that 17 projects that National campaigned on could cost between 30.9 billion amnd 46.6 billion, which would be up to $24 billion more than National forecasted…”

Nowhere does Newshub mention that the NZTA estimates are between $8.3 billion and $24 billion more, nor is there any mention of cost/benefit figures.
Of course, it is not only Government policies, add in weather, climate change, fires, sea-level rises, covid, potential diseases,…..

  Absolutely. When an oil pipeline is decommissioned the steel can be recycled. Solar panels are in the same camp as fibreglass wind turbine blades. BTW- Read today that Siemens have had to double their estimates for the maintenance and decommissioning of their thousands of wind turbines in operation world wide.

The Green Party candidate, Geordie Rogers, has come from behind to snatch the Lambton Ward vacancy on the Wellington City Council (see
https://wellington.govt.nz/-/media/your-council/elections/2023/lambton-ward-by-election/results/final/2024-pukehinau-lambton-general-ward-by-election-final-report.pdf?). So, it would appear that the Green Party machine succeeded in getting the vote out among the students.

The were 588 special votes, of which 536 were valid. Of those 536 votes, 357 were given for Rogers (total = 3,665), 149 were given for Karl Tiefenbacher (total = 3,653), and 16 were given for Ellen Blake (total = 552). In other words, Tiefenbacher’s 196 vote lead on the count of ordinary first preference votes (the Preliminary Count), became a 12-vote lead for Rogers once special votes were counted. There was a total of 8,632 valid votes at the start of the official count.

At the second iteration, Rogers was still ahead, by 13 votes. Then, Tiefenbacher took the lead at iteration 3, by 10 votes; retained it at iteration 4, by 53 votes; and at iteration 5, by 134 votes (3,943 to 3,809).

At this point, Blake had 653 votes. At the sixth and final iteration, of those 653 votes, only 497 were transferable. Of those 497, 338 (68.01%) transferred to Rogers (324 at the Preliminary Count); 159 (31.99%) transferred to Tiefenbacher (153 at the Preliminary Count); with the remaining 156 votes being non-transferable (the same as at the Preliminary Count).

So, as is often the case, the outcome came down to the final iteration. The voters of the Lambton Ward lined up behind the main candidate of the Right, and the main candidate of the Left, with the Left coming out on top by just 45 votes – 4,147 votes (50.27%) to 4,102 votes (49.73%).

With the participation rate being only 25.47% (36.83% at the triennial election in October 2022), then clearly, many people on the Right did not vote. This should be a lesson to those people; if you want to have a majority on Council after 11 October 2025, then you must get organised now, and get out the vote next year, just as the Greens have done, again.

I am sorry that someone has been injured, and from all accounts it is quite serious.

“The vehicle – understood to be an ATV – rolled into a ditch and got stuck on its roof, a police spokesperson said.
Two of the three occupants were critically injured.On Wednesday, Geoff Ross confirmed his wife and two family friends were involved in the crash, which he said was caused by mechanical failure.”

This is bad: the exact nature of the “mechanical failure” is obviously known by Mr. Ross, and should be published immediately so that owners of the same vehicle are warned of impending failure.
Was it mechanical failure of the vehicle or “mechanical” failure of one of the occupants ?

Or maybe it was one or more of the following:
Weather conditions ? Road conditions ? Alcohol and / or drugs presence ?
Speeding ? Inattention ? Sabotage ?

I am by nature a cynic, and tend to see things which maybe don’t exist. Sorry.

  Mechanical failures are not always design faults.
  
  Failure of worn out brakes would be a mechanical failure, or a wheel coming off due to too much twattish driving.
  
  I am not saying it is the case here, but the most common component to fail is the nut that does the steering.
