Rates and Roads

The Hos reports that ratepayers nationally are facing rate hikes of around 60% over the next decade to help fund transport costs.

I’ve never been convinced of the logic or fairness of funding local roads from rates, instead of on a more user pays basis. The retired pensioner with no car but a nice house pays more towards the roads than the couple with two cars and a modest house.
