Japan to gain control of Int Whaling Commission
It looks like after years or decades of efforts, Japan is about to gain a majority on the International Whaling Commission.
Japan has been “buying” supporters giving lots of aid to tiny countries such as Tuvalu, Nauru and Kiribati who all just happen to then join the IWC and vote Japan’s way. Somewhat amusingly landlocked countries such as Mali and Mongolia have also been signed up.
On the downside some of the Japan-friendly countries didn’t turn for some of last year’s votes, as they were too busy spending their bribes, sorry aid money, in local shops.
The IWC is a great example of why simply getting a majority of other countries voting your way on an issue, does not necessarily make such acts right, and conversely failing to have a majority does not necessarily make such acts wrong.
