Archbishop Farrar

Looking at this baptism done by the Archbishop of York, I could be tempted to become a priest 🙂

This is the accepted method in the Baptist and Brethren tradition. Except it’s common to wear white robes :oP Perhaps you should become a Baptist pastor instead?

Um, yes I can. It’s my right to take offence at whatever I choose. And it’s your right to post whatever you want (within the limits of the law obviously) but if you offend me, I’ll tell you.

I’m offended by this post for multiple reasons:

1. You objectify women (yet again)
2. You infer that Archbishops may have other motives for entering their profession. While this may have been the case some years ago it is very different now, particularly in the Anglican Church – your post reinforces damaging stereotypes.
3. I find point number 2 particularly offensive given how caring and dedicated the two Archbishops that I know are.

Thankfully, there is strict criteria for entering the Priesthood. And it’s even harder to become a Bishop (unless you’re that eejit Tamaki).

1. The implication was that becoming an Archbishop would allow him to get cozy with women. Heaven forbid that DPF seek physical intimacy with women! In the church I came from that sort of thing could lead to… dancing… But god help us, if your Dad didn’t “objectify” your Mum, none of us would be here, so puhleeeze, give it a rest;

2. He inferred nothing of the sort! I have no idea where you get that from. The only inferrence of ulterior motives is regarding DPF himself.

With their penchant for dorky fancy dress, who could resist?

The Whig is right. I was in no way suggesting improper behaviour by Archbishops towards women getting baptised. Everyone knows it is the Cardinals you have to watch – but not with the women!!

And being told one objectifies women, is one of those have you stopped beating your wife type allegations.

Yes I often post photos of attractive women. Guilty as charged. Does a gay guy posting beefcake photos means he is objectifying men?

My very positive dealings with female bosses, colleagues and friends in no way objectifies them. Hell I’ve almost lost count of the number of female friends I have who have said at some stage something like I am the only male friend they have who has not tried to sleep with them.

Likewise at my farewell function from Parliament I referred to a female colleague as the only person I concede as actually being more intelligent than me (I also said that with Don Brash having become an MP, I might have to concede I am now in third place 🙂

I think I have said on a number of occassions that female managers often make the best bosses. I’ve also said I think it is good to have had women make it to the top of politics, judiciary and business.

I disagree, Whig.

The clear implication is about DPF’s motives – no problem with that, he’s proved what he thinks of women many times in the past so I’m not in any doubt there.

The problem is that he has suggested he become a priest so as to get into the same position (yes, hoho) as the Archbishop.

Far be it from me to speculate on whether that plan of attack is likely to be more successful than what DPF is doing at the moment, but it promotes a negative stereotype about priests.

Two of my uncles are priests and it’s enormously difficult not to be offended by the snide tone.

Call me a whinger, call me whatever you want, but this post reeks of mediocrity.

You take offence Maria for some but not all. So I guess it’s ok to denigrate Bishop Tamaki? Do you even know what a double standard is?

These baptisims happen every 7-8 weeks in my church and other churches I know of – so what is the big deal? We have male and female pastors involved. In fact, I was baptised by a female pastor.

Esteemed Whig,

I will not fall into the trap of attempting to put words into DPF’s mouth – he will spit them out for sure!

Personally, I think Maria is not being illogical or inconsistent for criticising Tamaki – some of the faith values he professes to hold are anathema to the core of Christian being. While he is certainly to be commended for bringing the plight of families onto the social agenda, his methods, practices and other messages leave a lot to be desired from the Christian ‘faith’ of Destiny Church.

And the big deal is not the baptism, nor the fact that the Archbishop is in the font with the girl. If you’ll read the initial comments, you’ll see that it’s the perception and image DPF is projecting that is causing offence, rather than the reality.

PS. DPF: Touche – the vote was a tight one – had to win over the moral conservatives eh? 😉

Mellie – if you say I have “proved” what I think, then I think you should reveal this proof. Considering half the time I don’t even know what I think about women, I’d be most intrigued by teh findings of your psychological study.
