ISPs reject Telecom Offer
Two ISPs are heading to the Commerce Commission to ask for the determination given to Telstra-Clear last year to be extended to them. This is no surprise as the determination was for faster speeds at a lower price.
Normally such hearings can take a year or more but the ISPs are being very clever by asking for identical to the former determination. This means that the Commerce Commission should be able to make a decision within a couple of months.
Once again the importance of contention ratios comes to the fore with Telecom (according to reports) not being willing to guarantee a particular ratio which means it can’t guarantee a “broadband” speed greater than 24 kb/sec!
On the telco issue, Liberty Scott has a post on why he disagrees with unbundling etc. I’ll respond to it once back in Wellington at the weekend but good to have a debate going.
