The NZ Herald Editorial today endorsed local loop unbundling saying that the only good thing about our telecommunications statistics are that they are so woeful that they negate any suggestion that the status quo can be maintained.
And also pleasing to see Helen Clark support David Cunliffe in his desire for change. Paul Swain recommended local loop unbundling a couple of years ago and he was knocked back by the PM and Cabinet. This time it looks like there is real commitment to change. To quote the PM:
“It is a compelling case [for change] and there will be further action. I cannot say to you what it is, but there will.”
I imagine Telecom (to stave off action) is about to slash prices – especially for business customers who pay up to $2,400 a month for a full speed retail service whose wholesale cost has been calculated to be around $27 a month.
