OK, has anyone actually seen ‘Borkeback Mountain’? Good but way over-rated, IMO, and if you take away the gay angle you’re left with little more than the kind of well-wrought melodrama Hollywood used to do in it’s sleep. Admittedly, I’d rather shag Heath Ledger than Trevor Howard – but that doesn’t mean Brokeback Mountain was a better movie than Brief Encounter, that glorious hymn to keeping your upper lip stiffer than everything else. 🙂

Craig, often enough these days it’s good enough to do a fair impression of that kind of epic melodrama. As long as it has a point of interest beyond just retro revisionism I’m all in favour of keeping old forms alive in a well-executed, modern way.

And I thought the gay angle was a good thing. It gave the movie a point of differentiation, something that made it a movie that could not have been made during the era when Hollywood was making such movies.

Personally I thought Brokeback was rather good. Although if you’re looking for an entertaining comedy take on it I preferred this to DPF’s lego…

When I first heard about this film I thought it was set in the Old West – then there wouldn’t have been any problems. The good old fashioned 19th Century cowboys had an institution called the batchelor marraige, mainly because there were no women around. Perhaps the movie should have been called Bareback Mountain.

I think the question I’d be asking anyone who’d take a child to this M rated movie is: “What are you huffing, you stupid bitch?” And nobody smiles much, for any reason. My God, gay is the last adjective that comes to mind and anyone who could get a prurient thrill from THAT (brief and nowhere near as explicit as you might think) sex scene, in the context of the whole film, needs help. Fast.

No, please accept MY apology for being so dull and humourless it’s just been a pretty bad year for those of us who’d like a ceasefire in the so-called ‘culture wars’. In a weird way, the tide of socio-political b.s. that sloshed around Brokeback Mountain from all angles has seen it over-rated for all the wrong reasons, while obscuring it’s modest but genuine strengths. That’s a shame, IMO.

It seems unjust that Brokeback Mountain is getting all the fuss, while the other ‘gay’ Oscar movie – Capote – languishes in obscurity. There were only six or seven people in the cinema with me last night. And it’s really fucking good.
