Modern soldiers in most western armies have, after a few years of service, more medals than Idi Amin. Saying that though, service ribbons have been used for centuries to indicate long service, particular campaigns, unit citations etc. They just seem to get more of them these days.

Which is why Brian my father has collected more medals for his service since he retired than during the 37 1/2 years he was actually in the navy.

The latest only came through in September last year for what he was doing between ’57 & ’63.

We’ve got a long way to go to catch up yet. I think we have it about right at the moment though.

Aside from a number that are pending after initial aplication was denied. Mainly from the World Wars.
