I too listened to the piece via the internet and RNZ’s excellent new website service. Three criticisms: First, it was really a whingefest for journalists who don’t actually understand blogs; second there was no discussion on the disciplines under which bloggers operate, namely instant peer review and the risk of public ridicule if you get something wrong along with the inherent risk of action for slander or libel;and thirdly not a word about bloggers’ generally good reputation (from left and right) for instantly posting apologies and retractions when they do screw up.

The commentary grossly underplayed the influence of blogs on the recent US election. There was passing and condescending reference to ‘Rathergate’ but not a word about the decisive ‘Swiftboats’ campaign which was intiated and co-ordinated and funded via blogs and which did more than anything to sink the lying buffoon John Kerry.

I think hell will freeze over before radio NZ wakes up that there are bloggers other than their leftie mates at Public Address.

Yes, it was a very ‘twee’ poorly researched effort, I’m afraid.

I found a tad offensive that they attempted to paint Bloggers as a bunch of idiots, living out their failed journalistic ambitions by sitting alone at their computers every night spreading lies and miscalculated half truths.

As a side note, I don’t see how Public Address can be consider a blog when in reality it’s just a mishmash of columns.

Johnie, for your information I have had an original piece repeated in the Herald. Have you? Sir Hump’s has been linked by Instapundit (twice I think?) with resultant unique visits over 40,000 in one week if I remember correctly. You won’t understand but I don’t take too much notice of a juvenile twerp’s jabbering.

Any blogger who posted a work of fiction like the Sunday Star Times’ ‘Operation Leaf’ farce would be shamed into oblivion by both the MSM and fellow bloggers.

Instead, we saw Russell Brown tear down the credibility of that story’s main source after ten minutes with Google. Now, is it the blogisphere’s fault that a blogger managed to do more basic fact-checking than SST editor Cate Brett, with all the resources of Fairfax New Zealand behind her.

Keith Ng quite rightly got kudos from the VRWC when he promptly retracted and apoligised for a serious screw up in one of his election posts. Compare and contrast, people.

Does it hurt that one of the main writers at SR is in fact a highly respected and award wining journalist?

Does it hurt that photos taken by our writers have been picked up and used all over the world by main stream media?

Does it hurt that we can get audio interviews with leading personalities all over world for our podcast?

No… we feel pretty good about it woppo.

The real question is why “professional” journalists keep doing this “ignore the blogs, they are nothing” dance. They’re like miffed teenage girls stuck with last months hair.

Thanks for the link, spanner. I went over and had a look. Pretty good commentary, I thought. (Specially for a Leftie) He/she hit the nail on the head with the observation that blogs are not journalism. It seems jounalists just can’t seem to come to grips with that reality. They seem to want all bloggers to somehow ‘be journalistic.’ Correct me if I’m wrong but none of the people interviewed on that piece were actually bloggers. They were all journalists or journalists who dabble in blogging and kid themselves that they are bloggers.

i guess in a way blogs are to journalism what reality tv shows are to quality comedy and drama series – both blogs and reality tv shows are cheap, low labour cost, mostly of patchy quality, but occasionally both genres can create gems, either in terms of an individual episode (post) or an entire series (blog).
