High Tech Prison

An interesting article about a new high tech prison in the Netherlands.

All inmates have electronic wristbands which track their movements. This allows less guards and leads to savings of around NZ$60/day per prisoner.

This is around $2,200 a year per prisoner which is a signicifant amount of money. NZ has 7,200 prisoners so if new prisons incorporated this technology then that’s $15 million a year.

UPDATE: My maths is wrong. As Graham points out that is $22000 per prisoner per year or a total saving of $150 million a year.
