The picture is funny regardless of whichever politican is pictured. The focus is on the position of his hands which could happen to anyone. I don’t see that the humour is at all nasty or pointed, even thought in this case Steve Maharey, like hundreds of thosuands of people, has had family tragically affected by cancer.

Incidentially someone not cowardly enough to be anonymous e-mailed me on this same issue and far far more politely and less threatenign than you made similiar points. I am full of respect for him in bringing the issue to my attention, and we had a useful conversation on it. I have considerable less time for you jumping to conclusions and your post.

As I said at the beginning in no way did I, or do I now, see the caption contest as being personally nasty to Maharey. I am sure such a photo of any other politican would be treated the same.

Oh, FFS – making fun of Steve Maharey the public man is fair game. (And am I the only person who has done a lot of public speaking and been told endlessly not to “talk with your hands”?) There were too contribution over at XY Generation that (IMO) did cross the line, but really mate – get over yourself.

Despite my political differences with her husband, I had some contact with Liz Mackay while living in Palmerston North and the thing I remember about her was a deliciously wicked ability to see the joke in everything. She faced a very long struggle with cancer with enormous dignity, courage and (yes) even humour. The condolence message I sent to Steve reflected that.

I volnteer at the local hospice, but you wouldn’t be able to handle it without a bucket of smelling salts. Black humour is an essential coping tool for many people with terminal illnesses and their friends and families. It certainly was when my stepsister and my partner’s sister both died of cancer. I’m I’m also living with an inoperable – but thankfully benign – cancer at the moment, and I sure as shit don’t need to be surrounded with people rehearsing for my funeral. And if you do cross a line, I’m quite capable of being offended on my own behalf – as are women with breast cancer.
