Keeping the gerrymander

Sometimes voters are stupid!

In California they have just rejected a referendum to move the drawing up of electoral boundaries from politicians to judges.

Now to be fair to Californians that one was rejected as part of a backlash against the Governor who proposed it, but it still is a shame.

The US electoral system has many good parts to it, but one major weakness is the ability of politicians to set their own electoral boundaries. The NZ system where it is done primarily by officials, with minority representation from politicians is far superior.

After all the fuss about the Texas re-districting, I would have thought voting to change the way boundaries are down would be a no-brainer. But given the chance to change the system, the voters rejected it.
