GOP in trouble
I’ve been thinking for a while that the 2006 mid-terms could be very very bad for the Republican Party and Bush.
Not because of Iraq or Hurricane Katrina, even though they are factors. But because Bush is alienating his own base.
Many conservatives are appalled at how fast spending has grown under Bush. A grass-roots effort to fund New Orleans reconstruction by cutting waste has been put down by the GOP leadership.
And the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court has also not gone down well. Not because of what her likely views will be, but simply that she isn’t seen as qualified.
Ann Coulter has done a savaging, as only she can do, saying some pundits would praise Bush even if he had nominated his Scottish terrier Barney to the court.
