Its considered that Cheney is the one that runs the country, this just confirms it.
Interestingly , ‘reason Online’ has a item about a call from Cheneys Office which meant that a repair crew in Mississippi were pulled from restoring power to a hospital so that they could restore power to a pipeline.

Sorry Adolf, i’m a National voter who supports a strong defense force, but when it comes to Bush and his oil cronies, I agree with the left. I actively campaigned last year against Bush via the wonders of the internet, because Bush is an utter moron, and gives the word “conservative” a very bad name. He is an embarresment to the West.

Yup, such a big fucking moron he beat a two-term incumbent VP in a period of unprecedented prosperity, went on to win a second term with a four million vote margin in the popular vote, took the risk of personally campaigning for candidates in a mid-term that saw the GOP increase their majority in both houses of Congress etc., nominated two blacks for Secretary of State (including the most powerful black woman in history)…

Funny how those moron conservatives – Dubya, John Howard, Jim Bolger – seemed smart enough to keep winning.

BTW, yes it’s rather funny. Wouldn’t have been quite so funny if the headline tomorrow was “UN-hater Bush walks out of Security Council; X. mortally offended by interruption to speech” God knows things are fraught enough in Turtle Bay without a diplomatic gaffe caused by a presidential bladder.

Yes 2.5% , doesnt sound so good as 3 million (not 4) votes. Which was the lowest absolute vote margin since Harry Truman which was in 1948 ( he beat Dewey) Look it up at wikipedia

As for the GOP margin , its tiny compared to past democrat margins in the house and senate and as wiki says ..
Without the gains received in Texas, the Republicans would have suffered a net loss of three seats in the House. These gains may be attributed to the controversial redistricting that occurred in Texas in 2003..

It was also a historic win. Docent is ignoring the fact that Bush was up against an extremely well funded Left (George Soros alone threw vast millions at every Left/Liberal group that he could find) and a Left that was seriously and passionatley motivated and able to get its troops out to vote. That combined with an average economy and the terrorist insurgency in Iraq and Bush should have been gone. The fact that he won against the odds was a major achievement both for him and the Right in the US. The margins in this respect are misleading.

Which on its own does not tell you anything. Since the heyday of liberalism in the US, from the 1930’s to Carter in the late 70’s, the US electorate has been both changing and becoming far more polarised. Comparing Democrat wins from the 30’s to the 60’s with Republican wins now is comparing apples and oranges. Its just not the same electorate as it was.

This is speculation at best. It also ignores the fact that Republican strategy in the South has been hugely successful since the 1980’s. Blaming the Dem’s loss on a little redistricting in Texas ignores the fact that for twenty years the Dems have been losing more and more of the South to the Republicans.

Actually hes often right about many things compared to many others here. I know something about US politics, a little more than you I think, and your attempts to minimise the Republicans last win are based on an ignorant understanding of US political history and the factors that made this win historic. The real telling facts are not margins. The telling facts are that for more than twenty years the Republicans have led a hugely successful campaign to take back the various arms of US government and the Democrats so far have utterly failed to come up with an answer. The result is that Republicans now control both houses of Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court, most of the Midwest and Southwest states and the South itself, and the Dems have no strategy to get them back. All of those states and regions have growing populations. Most of the states, regions and cities the Dems control have populations that are stagnant or shrinking.

Thanks for the compliment, but I don’t always get things right and I don’t mind having it pointed out. I just wish ‘docent’ could get the sneer out of his voice, just once and stop dressing up his opinions as holy writ.

BTW, I’m not sure if I’d agree that the GOP “controls” the Supreme Court. There’s a long history of Presidents finding their nominees are less than totally ideologically reliable once on the bench – and I’d remind you that the reliable swing vote, Sandra Day O’Connor, was nominated by conservative God Ronald Reagan and blasted by the usual suspects as a “right-wing exremist” (including many of the same groups who are now saying “nominate another Sandra Day O’Connor, Dubya”).

Haven’t heard or read much about Judge Roberts’ confirmation hearings, but (based on my read of what I’ve read) movement conservatives seem pretty lukewarm, and I wonder if he wouldn’t turn out to be more of an O’Connor (a judicial conservative who pisses off everyone with monotonous regularity) than a Scalia.

Shawn it isnt speculation, its fact. Texas has an extra redistribution and makes more gains for the GOP- De Lay made no bones about why he made it happen. Tellingly the legal challenge hasnt finished , even if the 2002 House election was on the new boundaries, the 2006 may not. And De Lay has the stench of corruption around him which may lead to a backlash
But to you ‘margins are misleading’ !! But it trumps wishful thinking everytime. Now the GOP has the power it has to defend its record, but using moral values as an issue to get voters onside doesnt work forever. Craig Wrong Rapania forever the optimist , even had the actual numbers for George far more favourable than in reality

None of this fits any of your reasoning, which is how wonderful the GOp did, when Bush did very poorly compared to Clinton, Reagan, Nixon etc.

BTW Kerry raised more money from the internet, and historically the party in power has been the biggest fund raiser, with the party of business interests having an advantage.

As we have seen, Cheney was acting illegally in demanding a pipeline get power ahead of a hospital. The VP has no legal power other than as a mainly ceremonial chair of the senate. Sure Bush has given him a lot of policy decisions, but for the office of the VP to reach down into a state and then order a private business to change their priorities.These people werent under a federal contract they were a power company fixing their own facilities. Pity such over reaching didnt rescue dying patients from NO hospitals 2 weeks ago, or while the levees were bursting Bush was cutting cake with Mc Cain in Arizona.
That will make a great advertisement next year, eating cake while NO drowns

Its speculation that the Republicans would have suffered a loss without the redistricting. Thats an assumption with to many variables to prove.

What wisful thinking? Fact: The Republicans have been on the ascendancy since 1980. Fact: The Republican base is the mortgage belt suburbs which are growing fast, and in those US states ( apart from California)in the West, Southwest and South that have fast growing populations. The Dems base is shrinking both geographically and demographically, and it is increasingly blockaded in old Liberal cities like New York, Boston and San Francisco, which have large populations, but which are not representative of the rest of America. Led by ever more extreme Liberals, the Dems are becoming culturally isolated from the people they need to reach to keep winning elections.

Er…this is America we are talking about. Dont be so sure of that.

Plus despite the problems in Iraq the Republicans still have more credibility on foriegn policy than the Dems.

But its that comparison that is wrong, because again your comparing apples and oranges. Nixon wom against very weak candidates. Clinton was a brilliant campaigner during a time of relative peace and prosperity, and Reagan had huge popular momentum behind him after Carters braindead economic an foriegn policies led the country into serious decline.

Bush is not that great a campaigner or debater. His second run for the job was during a weak economy and a bloody and violent foriegn war. The Left got its troops out and was motivated like never before. And the Left was extremely well funded and had a grey but capable candidate.

Bush should have been toast. The fact that he won at all is why it was such a major victory for the Republicans. The margins only tell you one part of the story, not the whole thing. And by comparing them with elections held under vastly different circumtstances you are deriving a false picture and a false conclusion.

The responsibility for the levees and the evacuation was the state and local authorities and the New Orleans mayors office, all of which are run by the Democrats.

FEMA is the only Federal authority that screwed up, so the “blame Bush” strategy is just the usual cheap politicking from the Dems during a national crisis.

While the NO mayor was on television whining about Bush buses that he should have authorised to help evacuate people were sitting idle. Now thats a great look 🙂

Its as yet too early to gage the effect of Katrina on the mid-term elections, but one thing is sure. Louisiana is the only state in the South the Dems control. As the blame Bush strategy blows over the attention of the good people Loisiana will increasingly focus on the failure of the state Democratic party during the crisis. Katrina could well end up sealing the Democrats southern defeat.

The texas redistricting led to GOP gains of 5 . Overall the GOP gained 7 but lost 4, and 5 of those gains just happened to be Texas !!

So the rest of the country with vitually no boundary changes in 403 districts the GOP wins 2 new seats, in Texas with new boundaries they win 5 new seats out 32.
