Number Portability

In 2007 New Zealand will finally have phone number portability. Welcome to the 21st century!

Hmmm. Great. At the cost of a competitive marketplace. Aardvark (aardvark.co.nz) echoed my concerns on this yesterday. With Telecom tying up an IP network with the last copper mile part of it, and making a substantial investment in an IP based network, there is NO WAY that unbundling will happen in the forseeable future, and then some.

New Zealand and Mexico(?) are the only countries left with a monopolised last mile… welcome to the 21st century? I think not.

We’ve been (once again) sold down the river David, and with your background you should know better.

Shame on you.

Yes… one begins to wonder if the government received a confidential briefing from Telecom on their investment plans before deciding to squash local loop unbundling. Maybe an OIA request or two are in order?

This is amazing This is a common right in mosy OECD countries, ours was done in 1997 in OZ, so NZ is only 10 years behind!…and they say NZ is ahead of most in terms of testing new technology and trends… get me a bucket.. here’s the Oz one, which applies to Mobiles and Fixed lines: http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/609735/fromItemId/3881

I still can’t get over how expensive and inefficent telcommuncations are in New Zealand. When I got my ADSL and phone line set up it took a day from phone call to connection of both phone and internet. It costs me about 40NZ a month for unlimited broadband and a phone connection! They even sent me a n english speaking technican.

Unbelievable.

NZ really screwed the pooch with its railways and telecom industries. I’m trying to figure out if it was incompetence or malfeasance that lead New Zealand down the path of unfettered, poorly-planned privatisation and deregulation.
