Lovers vs Partners

This article in the SST refers twice to the subject’s “lover” rather than her boyfriend, partner, companion etc.

A strange term to use in a newspaper article, especially when the former relationship is not even the subject of it. I wonder if there is a NZ Herald style guide for terms to use – would be somewhat surprised if “lover” was the preferred term to describe a companion.
