Drinking Age

It looks like Matt Robson’s bill to increase the age of purchase for alcohol to 20 will pass its first reading.

The issues around teenage drinking are to do with education and enforcement. It is stupid to criminalise 19 year olds going to the pub, because there is a problem with 14 year olds getting drunk at private parties.

It’s a bit like raising the age of sexual consent to 25, because too many 15 year olds are getting pregnant.

I suspect the bill will die in select committee, as it should.
