Labour’s taxes and levies

Jimmy Jangles has a useful list of the 22 new taxes, levies or increases under Labour.

Holy Cow No wonder I’m alwaus broke the government is taking all my money, and throwing it away on Hip Hop tours. Its not really fair is it. Maybe I should come up with some sort of |Tour then Maybe I might get some of it back. But no Hand Ups, Not Hand Outs

This list includes a bunch of places where ACC levies have gone up as ‘increases’. But, why not include the ACC levy increases for squid jigging, professional rugby, aerial top dressing and hair dressers while you’re at it?

Now we’re up to 26 levies that have increased!

But what about the ACC levy decreases for groundsmen and jewellery manufacturers? ACC levies regularly go up and down across different industries and areas, based on previous year’s costs and claims. That’s ACC doing its job like an insurance company – risk premiums for different things change over time as their risk profile changes. So each year dozens of ACC levies go up, and dozens more go down.

Phil R and Mr Jangles comparing this list of increases with the question in parliament is comparing apples with oranges. Cullen, quite rightly, didn’t think to consider every separate ACC industry levy as a distinct thing. Because doing so is silly.

If you care about ACC levies then a much better question is “is ACC’s overall take increasing or decreasing as a proportion of GDP”.

Okay,
Now its time for one of the commenters to say how great it would be under a National government. Or what the ACT party would do in this situation.
Then some of you agree, some of you ‘think you are’ cleverly point out anti labour stuff. David writes another Blog and it begins again.

I dunno what National or Act would do but I’d open up ACC to some real competition. Then ACC premiums would likely fall and I’d take them off the list.

ACC is included because it is a state monopoly and is compulsory. As it is taken by compulsion it is a tax.

I would hope National and ACT would blow this Socialist rort to pieces and put in a competitive Free market system of private providers who are under the cosh to provide a value for money product or go under. Thats the way the people of New Zealand will be better off Kate! Hell, even the Greens weren’t all that happy that ACC was remonopolyised by Labour as they could see that they would be paying lower premiums for their organic farm workers cover with a private sector provider.

I’ve no objection to listing ACC levies as an increase in fees if it is done honestly: ie, if you either list all the increases and decreases in each ACC levy, or if you give the overall total increase in ACC levies (if any).
