Peition against cricket tour of Zimbabwe

Someone has set up a petition to encourage the Black Caps not to tour the despostic nation of Zimbabwe.

I’ve signed.

Unfortunately the long term solution for Zimbabwe is the end of Mugabe. Either by natural causes or cause and effect (lead).

Signing cricket petitions is not going to change a thing. UN action on Zimbabwe is also pathetic. They should have their seat at the assembly suspended, with no voting at the very least.

Ah I thought the petition was to the Black Caps.So signing the petition may change something if a Black Cap decides not to go because of the petition.

What do you think Mugabe will do if a bunch of cricketers decide not to turn up??????????? I guess you hope he will resign? Which probably will happen………………………………
It will be a massive blow to him……………………………….

Sector – Its a petition to OUR cricketers.I don’t think it will make the slightest difference to Mugabe. It may however force the ICC to reconsider their position in regard to Zimbabwe. When Zimbabwe’s own cricketers are engaging in disobedience that may tell even you something.
Oh and get a new keyboard your ‘?’ and ‘.’ keys seem to be sticking.

What good will come out of it?
No cricket to be played against Zimbabwe is a death sentence to the sport in their country!
Is that what you want?

Who gets the US$2m fine? Just the ICC or does some (or all) of it go to Zimbabwe? It won’t mean much if the tour was cancelled and the fine all goes to Zimbabwe. Unless the money goes to the poor in Zimbabwe.
Anyway I assume that those ppl signing the petition won’t mind chipping in a few $ towards the fine. While I am against the tour, I don’t think I or anyone should sign the petition or put pressure agains the tour without being willing to financially contribute to any costs related with cancelling the tour. Just my 2wickets worth lin

It was me who started the petition. You are right, Mugabe would no resign because the Black Caps don’t go, but by going, we are turning a blind eye to what he’s doing and has done to the country. He is the patron of Zimbabwean cricket, so who do you think is going to get LOTS of money from the tour, including money from TV rights, etc… Yes, Mugabe and his government. The petition is to stop the Black-Caps from going, thereby stopping them from condoning Mugabe’s actions.

The players in the team will also get some money,who needs it more Mugabe or the players who dont even have their own sets of pads?
They are there to play cricket.They are sportsmen!
Are you saying Alistair that by going to Zimbabwe they are supportive of Mugabe’s actions? Maybe you should ask them how they feel about Mugabe and ask them what they believe they are going to play cricket for….politics or to play the sport they love against another bunch of cricketers who are in the unfortunate position of living under Mugabe?

Well, how many Zim cricket players do not even live in Zimbabwe anymore, including black players like Olanga, because they spoke out against Mugabe. They have been banned from playing cricket for Zim, and no longer live in the country for fear of their lives. My view is, by going there, we are ignoring what’s going on in the country. Ordinarily I would never mix sports and politics, but he is the patron of Zim Cricket, so like it or not, it is mixed in this case. Mugabe and his government will benefit from this tour (yes, the cricket players too), but I think the world needs to stand up and say “what’s going on there is unacceptable, and we will have nothing to do with you until you change your ways”.

Fletch, I dont expect it to DO anything. I dont sign petitions to achieve any specific goal, it is simply telling someone what I reckon.

But I suppose if anything if enough people (NZers) sign it NZ cricket might think that going to Zimbabwe would be a PR disaster and would alienate a big chunk of their audience. Signing the petition is like telling NZ Cricket what you think on the subject. I dont think it will change terribly much but then again it didnt cost me anything.

If your objection is that simply expressing our opinion is useless as it wont lead to the over throw of Mugabe, then I have to ask you , what is the point of you expressing your opinion on anything, unless it is going to markedly affect things? Wouldnt that be a waste of time too? Do you feel smug and self congratulatory for doing it?

Kimble-You are not just expressing your opinion. You are trying to cancel a sports teams tour of Zimbabwe, is that not the aim of this?
Why dont you leave it up to the cricket players to decide, rather than put pressure on them to do what “you” believe is the right thing to do! Do you really believe that they are unaware of what is going on in Zimbabwe?

And Kimble “Do i feel smug”……Not as much as you do. If you think that calling me Fletch is some sort of intimidating tactic it just shows how pathetic you really are!

Fletcher IS your name isnt it? How could you be intimidated by this? Anyway…

I AM just expressing my opinion, Fletcher, my opinion is that the Black Caps shouldnt tour Zimbabwe. Again, your objection appears to be with anyone expressing an opinion about anything. Seriously, what is with that?

Why dont you leave it up to the potential petition signers [cricket players] to decide, rather than put pressure on them to do what “you” believe is the right thing to not do!

I do think that some players know what is going on in Zimbabwe, but the thing is, if it is left up to the individual players to decide whether or not to go some will say “No, I dont want to be used for propoganda purposes by a tyrant so I will not go.”

Then NZC will say, “We respect your decision and it will not affect your selection for the national team in the future.” And then move onto the next teir of players.

Eventually, you will get to some players who will look at the money and the status of having represented their country in Cricket and figure that that outweighs their moral convictions. So a second or third rate Black Caps team WILL end up touring and the outcome would be the same as if the first team went. But there would be the extra possibility that Zimbabwe wins the test match and you just know the Patron of Cricket in Zimmers would use that for all its worth.

The fact is that i have posted on here plenty of times, yet the only time you went to the trouble of looking at my email address was when i said something you didn’t like,remember “Fletch you sad git”?
If it is just your opinion why do you need to put it in writing?
Ohh…… dont worry you answered it in the last 3 paragraphs of your previous rant!
