Hate Speech

The NZ Herald reports on the first day of a parliamentary select committee inquiry into possible legislation to ban “hate speech”.

The Government is backing off the idea with an overwhelming majority of submissions attacking the proposals as a threat to freedom of expression and the democratic process.

As NRT has said previously the best solution to hate speech is more speech, not less. Ridicule those who say hateful things, rather than try to remove their right to be heard.
