Fake Rape Claims

The NZ Herald reports another high profile fake rape claim. I get torn between anger and pity for those people who make fake claims. I think the worst effect of them, apart from when an innocent person is jailed for a crime which never happened, is that it creates a climate of suspicion for all claims.

Is there any reliable studies or evidence as to how many reported attacks are recanted or deemed false? It is hard to judge off the occasional media report. It just seems to be quite high of late.
