There is a case that the Trust by not paying the withheld income to the IRD committed tax fraud. Then you get the recipient not declaring all/any of that income. What are the chances of that happening, that both parties independently overlooking their respective legal requirements?

I do hope that the IRD apply the law and do to the Trust and Tamihere what the do to every one else. Anything less will not be good enough for this taxpayer.

I am interested to hear why Chairman Helen changed her views on Tamihere in the 24 hours following her laughable cabinet rehuffle. Does she now beleive he has a future in the senior ranks of the labour party ? If so why the significant change in fortune for Tamihere when he was clearly in the cold on 20 December ? Does John have a big stick hidden somewhere ?

Radio has been worst. I am in despair at the inability of some journalists to do independent critical analysis. To not declare $200,000 or so of income on your tax returns is a very serious matter.

Perhaps they are nervous of his good old kiwi bloke vote which the sisterhood is very nervous of losing, indeed that is the most vulnerable area for Labour. They will all march off and support Winston Peters who will extract blood from Labour for his support.

Has any-one actually seen this report or has Helen withheld it, put out a whole lot of spin (saying he has been cleared etc) and the media are simply publishing that??? I feel there is manipulation going on here. Please please I hope Fran O’Sullivan picks this up, she is an old friend, and I know she can smell a rat when there is one. Filing an “inaccurate” tax return (I put that gently) is a hanging offence. The man must be just a dumb maori boy, so we will forgive him.

Tim, I doubt Fran O’Sullivan will do anything of the kind. Like many pillars of the commentariat who wanted to lynch Donna Awatere-Huata with Tuku’s old boxers, she appears to have found a warm spot for Johnny.

Final delicious irony: the Herald reporting today that JT, scourge of the ‘Business Brown Table’, is “being advised by Business Roundtable chairman and tax specialist Rob McLeod…”

Surely there is a paper trail showing where this money came from and went to. Does the motion approving the golden handshake approve a sum of $300,000 or $195,000. It all seems a Claytons Inquiry to me. If Tamihere is re-instated to cabinet what portfolio will he be considered qualified for, Justice? Police? or Inland Revenue?
