Governor-General speculation
After predicting Jim Bolger was about to be named Governor-General, the media have now said it will be Sir Wilson Whineray.
To be fair to the media, it is possible that Helen Clark is emulating John Kerry (who did a poll on what his reaction to the latest Osama Bin Ladin tape should be!) and leaking possible names to test market reaction so to speak.
I really would rather not have a system where the head of government just unilaterally selects the effective head of state. But as long as that is the system, I do have to say Whineray would be a good pick. It would also mark the first ever white male appointed by Labour to the role since Lt. General the Lord Freyberg, VC, GCMG, KCB, KBE, DSO was appointed by Peter Fraser in 1945.
