Charging for air space
When Tuhoe claimed “absolute sovereignty over all air space to the heavens above” I, like most, treated it as a joke.
However when Ngati Tuwharetoa tries to charge for air space above Lake Taupo the joke is no more.
It is quite simple. The Government should not be negotiating this absudity. If Ngati Tuwharetoa think the deed fo settlement allows them to charge for use of airspace they should press their claim in court, and the Crown should defend vigorously.
If Ngati Tuwharetoa did win in court, then it would be a good lesson to the Crown not to hand lake and river beds back, unless they get rights to airspace exempted.
